Emacs key bindings for Gaim?
02/10/2004 02:49 AMSwitching between Yahoo Messenger and Gaim is causing me no end of
pain. Yahoo Messenger had Emacs key bindings by default, so I can just
type and edit without thinking. However, all of the normal editing
keystrokes have vastly different effects. My attempts at Googling an
add-on or patch have been rather fruitless. I can't believe I'm the
only one who is bothered by this. If it matters, I'm using Gaim

Emacs is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time

language (elisp), and comes with many packages for doing mail, news
and more, all in your editor.
Changes:
The "Configure" info directory now uses dynamic path setting, so info
files can go under .app. Improved select() handling and PTY fixes so
shell mode and tramp run smoothly. Significant rendering enhancements.
Now works under the Art backend under GNUstep. Non-Latin text
rendering works (but not fontsets), and LEIM is bundled. UTF-8 is used
for clipboard interaction. The arrow cursor is now used on the scroll
bar. Objc-mode and tramp are now bundled in site-lisp.

XSLT-process 2.2 for Emacs released
01/14/2003 02:28 PM
I'm happy to announce a new release of the XSLT-process mode
for Emacs. XSLT-process is an Emacs mode for applying and
debugging XSLT stylesheets from within XEmacs or GNU Emacs. You can
also use this mode to do processing of DocBook documents edited with
Emacs.
Tony Addyman contributed most of
the changes in this release. He's using Emacs and XSLT-process to
teach XSLT to students in UK!
Here are the main changes since the 2.1 release:
- XSLT-process now uses Saxon 6.5.2, Xalan 2.4.1 and FOP 0.20.4
- Debugging using Xalan is now fully supported.
- Both JDK 1.3 and 1.4 are supported.
- During debugging sessions the output produced by executing the
stylesheet is serialized immediately, then displayed and incrementally
updated in an Emacs window.
- Added parameter passing to the XSLT processor. These are
parameters that are specified to all the stylesheets, in addition to
any other parameters. They are specified through the customization
menu.
- Logging output, error messages, etc. generated by the FOP
processor are displayed in the *Messages* buffer. The level of logging
can be customized.
- Improvements to the display of information during debugging.
- MacOS X is now a supported platform, in addition to Linux and
Windows 2000.

AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their
Brand
AT&T Says AT&T Wireless Broke Their
Brand
08/06/2004 06:45 PMIt never really made sense when AT&T spun out AT&T Wireless that they
let the mobile company keep the name. It was clearly very confusing
to customers who
still think they're the same company and it
was a clear risk to AT&T's brand -- as well as their ability to offer
their own wireless service at another point in the future. While it
was clear that AT&T was just trying to cash in on the hype around
wireless, the fact that they didn't realize that wireless had to be a
part of their future was a bit scary. Of course, among the many
things that did happen was that AT&T Wireless faltered and did,
indeed, harm the overall AT&T brand name. So, while they're in the
process of (maybe) selling out to Cingular, and AT&T wants the name
back, many are questioning
whether
that's a good idea. AT&T Wireless has such a weak reputation
right now that starting a new mobile phone service under that brand
may be an uphill battle. AT&T is now suggesting that
AT&T Wireless broke their
agreement by screwing up the brand and being so poor at customer
service. Right now, honestly, this looks more like a negotiating ploy
concerning the return of the name, because if the Cingular deal does
go through, then it shouldn't much matter any more if the old AT&T
Wireless can't use the name any more.

Who Needs Facts When Opinions Can Be

03/29/2005 05:32 PMWhile actual studies looking at the language skills of kids who send
instant messages and SMS text messages suggest that
there
's no difference in language skills, why should actually looking
at the subjects stop those who are worried about the impacts of these
communications technologies? The folks over at Reader's Digest -- who
built their whole business on the idea of "condensing" things down --
have published a study saying that
many parents
believe that such messaging technologies harm the vocabulary
skills of their kids. Of course, the headline is more
inflammatory than reality, because it's still less than half of
parents who believe so (a quarter of parents believe such technologies
help vocabulary skills). Still, the problem with this study is that
it's not studying the actual issue at all. It's studying what parents
think is happening, as opposed to what is
actually
happening. However, for many people that distinction gets lost, and
they assume the study actually says something it never did.
