We may soon know
the identity of Deep Throat. It seems that Bob Woodward has penned
the obituary of the elusive Deep Throat. There have been
no lack of theories for who might actually be Deep

tying it back
to Bush somehow.

09/06/2004 01:35 AMThe current problems that arise with Windows XP Service Pack 2 when
you are running certain applications, including some from Microsoft
itself, seem suspicious to me and remind me of the days of "DOS isn't
done until Lotus won't run." I mention that because among the huge
list of applications that don't work or that need hand-tweaking to run
with SP2, you'll find some that compete directly with Microsoft
initiatives. This all proves what you get with 45 million lines of
what must be spaghetti code.

Weird name, but Sauce Reader is
a new News Aggregator client for Windows. It's free for
personal use.
Hmm. I don't think free for personal use leaves much room for
profit.
I mean how many businesses classify news reading as legit
business activity?
If businesses allow employees to read news online during work
hours, is that business
use? How many companies will actually buy news aggregators
for its employees?
Boy, I am getting tired of seeing these three-pane UIs.

secret law. In response to a September 10th ruling by the 9th Circuit
US Court of Appeals that rejected DOJ's attempt to file their
arguments in secret, the DOJ filed a motion asking the Court to

Chinese company makes soy sauce from
human hair
05/26/2004 07:46 PMA resourceful Chinese company got in trouble for brewing soy sauce out
of human hair.
China Central Television (CCTV), the state television
station, first raised public worries over the quality of domestic soy
sauce by uncovering a substandard workshop in central China's Hubei
Province, where piles of waste human hair were found. The hairs were
treated in special containers to distill amino acid, the most common
substance contained in soybean sauce. Human hair is rich in protein
content, just like soybean, wheat and bran, the conventional and
legally accepted raw ingredients for the production of soy
sauce.

In case you really enjoy your spam
In case you really enjoy your spam
09/03/2004 12:46 AMI received a great spam email today. Apparently it was sent as a
multipart MIME message (contains both text
and HTML). I have my email client set to
display the text part instead of the HTML
part when both are available. So instead of the spam, what I
saw was a plea to “upgrade” my email client so that I
could read his spam.
The e-mail original message was not plain text please
use html capable e-mail client program. HTML
(Hyper Text Markup Language) e-mail messages are with the look
and feel of Web pages, instead of plain text. Like Web pages, HTML e-mail message can incorporate formatted
text, images and other objects. These objects are not embedded in the
e-mail message itself; rather the HTML code
in the message makes references to images and other files stored on a
remote Web site. New generation of e-mail programs has recently become
available that simplify the view of HTML
messages. HTML e-mails are more
visually appealing and are usually easier to read than plain text
messages. In fact HTML e-mail messages
allows us to use graphics, color and text formatting to add your
usability to the e-mail message. When you open your e-mail message,
the HTML code loads the image from the
specified URL into the message’s
layout. A wedding of linkable Web pages and regular email, HTML email is a growing medium for Internet
communications, and it’s getting easier to use. An HTML e-mail is a message that is presented in
HTML instead of plain text. This allows
control of colors and fonts, and it even allows the inclusion of
images in a message. It’s easy to send HTML
e-mail from your client. The key is to understand how to form
MIME messages.
Please use a HTML capable email client to
view this message.

07/30/2004 03:49 PMLast month Norman Walsh
started using a Creative Commons license for his essays (consistently
informed and provocative on XML, Semantic Web, and other technical
topics) and photographs. Norm does us the favor of explaining
his choice:
When I started writing this collection of essays, I slapped on a
quick copyright statement asserting "All Rights Reserved." That was
simple and easy to do, but it has always struck me as overly
conservative.
I wouldn't release code under such a restrictive license, so why
release words or images that way? There's no good reason, and Creative Commons offers a
selection of much more friendly alternatives.
So this morning I'm switching to the Creative Commons
Attribution-NonCommercial License. In a nutshell, you are free: to
copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and to make derivative
works.
But you have provide attribution (you don't get to take credit for
my work) and you can’t use my work for commercial purposes. At least
not without getting my explicit permission first.
Seems fair. Share and enjoy!
A common story, but one that bears repeating when told so simply
and well.
By the way, the design of Norm's site is a real treat. I
can see that he has honed every detail. Those with different tastes my
see nothing special.
