This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source
dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at
MySQL. (I see
the Plone Foundation themselves
are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not
dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't
owned by the ASF, because the
Apache License
is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open
source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not
dangerous.)

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AMBeing the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know
of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly,
popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit
of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of
open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity
or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the
right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software
without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

04/06/2005 08:53 PM The meaning of the term "open source," is about to change, according
to the Open Source Initiative (OSI), the group that determines whether
or not software licenses can be called "open source." Board members of
the volunteer organization have approved sweeping changes that will
tighten up the way it classifies open-source licenses and, eventually,
create a new "multi-tier" classification system that will favor some
open source licenses over others.

Microsoft needs to consider a partial open source model for code
development if it hopes to survive the coming open source onslaught,
says Paul Nowak. That's why, he argues, the reported source code leak
of portions of the Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems today
"has the potential to be the best thing that ever happened to
Microsoft technically."
