DoCoMo Sets 3G Speed Plan

DoCoMo Sets 3G Speed Plan 01/06/2005 02:32 PM
DoCoMo is moving on up to Super 3G, then 4G: DoCoMo seems to have responded to the 3GPP discussions about 100 Mbps cellular networks by 2009 by talking further about its own plans. The company currently has a 3G network running W-CDMA with about 384 Kbps download and 128 Kbps upload. They plan to add HSDPA by March 2006 for 1 to 2 Mbps upload and download. Then on to Super 3G in the 2007 to 2010 framework which they anticipate providing 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps of raw speed, which probably translates to something like 15 to 20 Mbps down and 5 to 10 Mbps up. Quite impressive, but they'll be competing against fixed WiMax and 802.11n Wi-Fi clouds by that point. DoCoMo says Super 3G is mostly a software upgrade, which makes it a more feasible migration path. Finally, starting in 2010, DoCoMo will roll out 4G with 1 Gbps downlink speeds. It all sounds very pretty on paper, but DoCoMo has managed to execute in the past on high-speed cellular technology that has sounded slightly ludicrously ahead of its time until they launched it....

The Times sets its WMD record straight

The Times sets its WMD record straight 05/26/2004 02:59 AM
Stay up late on the West Coast and you get tomorrow's New York Times today. Tonight brings a long "From the Editors" note that reconsiders the WMD hysteria that marked some of its prewar coverage and marred its reputation:

"It is still possible that chemical or biological weapons will be unearthed in Iraq, but in this case it looks as if we, along with the administration, were taken in. And until now we have not reported that to our readers."

"We consider the story of Iraq's weapons, and of the pattern of misinformation, to be unfinished business. And we fully intend to continue aggressive reporting aimed at setting the record straight."

For the Times, this transparency thing is still very new. And admitting that major stories that helped launch an ill-conceived war were at best careless and at worst fraudulent is a painful thing for any journalistic enterprise. But admitting mistakes is the first step toward preventing their recurrence.

Now if we can only get our president to understand that principle. Instead, here he is solemnly announcing, in his speech last night, that "Iraq is now the central front in the war on terror." Sure it is. How did it get that way? It wasn't such a front before we invaded. Our mistakes -- Bush's mistakes -- opened another front for bin Ladenism to exploit.

Will Saletan in Slate has a smart deconstruction of the strange rhetoric in Bush's speech that omits any acknowledgment of missteps and all reference to his own agency in the unfolding Iraq disaster. Bush hasn't done anything; instead, "history is moving." It would be funny if there weren't so many lives already lost, and more on the line.

SMS text speed record smashed
June 29, 2004

A SINGAPORE business student with nimble thumbs has broken the Guinness world record for the fastest SMS.

Kimberly Yeo, 23, clocked 43.24 seconds for typing 26 words.

The 160-character, 26-word text she typed read: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

The previous record was 67 seconds for the same 26 words, held by James Trusler of Britain.

More than 500 people took part in Sunday's "SMS Shootout", The Straits Times said.
