On Creative Commons and attribution
online...

Imagine a circumstance where someone was building a weblog aggregator like Haddock Blogs, but imagine for a moment that they were doing it with the full text of other people's weblog entries, sectionalised by theme and with the name of the writers put by them (like a byline), but without any link back to the site where they originated. You might have to look pretty close to realise that the posts didn't originate on the aggregator site in the first place. That would seem, well, wrong to me - like a kind of passing off. But as far as I can tell, there isn't a single Creative Commons license that wouldn't allow someone to do that with your work if they wanted to perfectly legally. There's something weird there about the nature of attribution on the web, I think, that maybe doesn't sit too well with the concept of attribution named in the Creative Commons licenses. Naming an author isn't enough to attribute online, you should be making a connection with them...

Creative Commons Flash online 12/15/2003 11:36 AM
The brilliant new Creative Commons Flash animation (which premiered last night at the one-year anniversary party, which was a blast) is now online! I'm very flattered at being featured in it... 7M B Flash Link (via Lessig) (NB: Two minor corrections: I won a Campbell Award, not a Hugo, and sold out one print run, not two)

Creative Commons licensed journal online 05/06/2004 02:30 PM

The Center for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University has started ap plying Creative Commons licenses to its journals. Classics@ is available online at their site. It's great to see further uptake in the educational world, as the ideals of academic publishing are pretty close to the goals of Creative Commons.

Being an entrepreneur means I have a fetish for domain names.  I just got the openbookshelf.com and the gang.  What is the chance of me actually using it?  Near zero.  Sometimes I feel like a dumb squirrel.  Thankfully, there are dumber squirrels.

Online PHP Editor Contest - Part 2

Online PHP Editor Contest - Part 2 05/26/2004 02:38 AM
A few months back PHP-Editors.com ran a contest called 'Online PHP Editor'. After looking through all the code submitted it was clear that the contest had started a group of new open source projects. The twist in this contest is that client-side script is highly desirable for real time functionality, for example 'code completion or debugging'. As always PHP is the only server-side script allowed.

New Jakarta Chair

New Jakarta Chair 02/19/2004 10:16 AM

Apache TomcatYesterday, the Apache Software Foundation's Board of Directors appointed Geir Magnusson Jr. as the new chair of the Jakarta Project Management Committee.  I will remain on the PMC as well as the board.

Apache AntI was appointed as the chair just under three years ago after having served as the release manager for both Ant and Tomcat.  For the past year, I have been actively seeking a replacement.  The reason is simple: while at first, I had an itch that needed scratching and I sought to make a number of good things happen, over time those itches were scratched and my role evolved into one of stopping bad things from happening (project members misbehaving, addressing criticisms from within the foundation, etc.).  Focusing exclusively on defense is not a sustainable model: there also need to be a focus on building.

JavaIn addition to Geir and my world views being very much aligned, Geir is also the ASF's representative to the JSPA's SE/EE Executive Committee.

CNN reports that Jakarta has been bombed. Here's the explosion cloud rising. Here's a shot of Plaza 89 after the explosion, and here's another from a different perspective. Has flickr beaten textame rica in the race to beat CNN? Are ma_girl and fauzanazmi so different that they must use moblog services to suit their personalities or is it something else? How much specialization and differentation can we expect in the moblog arena? Will there be moblog streams of current events like this bombing in Jakarta? Will taggi ng suffice for such a task? Or is this just another terrorist bombing in Jakarta, I'm up late, and found a photo from a bombing before the story even broke on any of the major news sites? Ennui.
