04/06/2005 06:48 AMIt seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their
attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original
Atari) to
make
a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from
years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly)
on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic
concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers
to learn -- resulting in a
competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of
course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours.
While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind
people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a
game is still about
gameplay at its core -- which many of
today's game designers seem to forget.

couldn't wait to share with the world. First, a Command Prompt
Explorer Bar (via Julien Cheyssial). Second, PhotoFiltre - one of the
best free image editors I've ever found (courtesy of
alt.comp.freeware). If it weren't for RSS, I wouldn't have discovered
either one of 'em. Jason suggested that we start running a top ten
"new feeds" list in our newsletters, so expect to see the first one
next week. Oh yeah, I also learned about Peter Hirschberg's classics
through my news aggregator. Still think I'm crazy? Good....

YAFPC (Yet Another Free PDF-composer) can compose
PDF documents from picture files and other PDF
files, encrypt the created document, and send it
to a given email address. YAFPC is designed to act
as a command-line tool that combines with
GhostScript to provide a network shared PDF
printer which automatically adds letterheads,
company-logos, watermarks, and Terms & Condition-
pages to the printed documents, and then mails the
document to the user who initiated the print job.
It has a graphical user interface (GUI) for easy
configuration and testing. Easy-to-use sample
scripts for setting up a PDF-printer on Windows or
Linux servers are included.
Changes:
This version fixes a bug where "Encrypt Output"
only was working in testmode using the GUI for
configuration when encryption was diasabled.

Pickup Games, The Reckoning - Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space
Pickup Games, The Reckoning - Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space
06/18/2004 10:01 PM
MATT GALLANT -- Well, my week is up, and
I've saved as a parting shot the ultimate pickup game: Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space, developed by Digital Eel and published by Cheapass Games. Games take just
minutes.
There's not as much brain power required as there is in the other
games from this week; in fact your score really has more to do with
luck than anything else. But despite having probably less strategy
involved than a game of Freecell, SAIS feels like it's smarter than it
is, because it recalls elements of games with more depth, with its
goals of space exploration, combat, trade and collection.
The demo is pretty crippled compared to the full version, but the
full version costs only $15. Well, the PC and Mac versions do. There's
PocketPC and PalmOS versions too (new Tapwave Zodiac owners take
note!), available from Astraware for $19.99.
And with that fifth and final recommendation, I'm done! All five of
the games I've mentioned this week are great for spending a few
minutes with, but so playable that you'll be able to play for hours.
Have fun, Gizmodo!
