Flying WiFi - Good For Your Health Too

Flying WiFi - Good For Your Health Too 05/14/2004 01:32 PM
While everyone is talking about how Connexion's WiFi-in-the-sky system is launching with Lufthansa, allowing people to have full internet access while they fly (for a fairly reasonable price, as well), some are pointing out the additional benefits beyond creating one more place where you can be "always on." Now, in the event that someone gets sick on the flight, the crew will use the internet connection to transfer data to an emergency doctor unit on the ground in order to get medical advice remotely. Once again, the unintended (good) consequences of wireless connections are showing up very quickly.

Why Requiring Registration Does More
Harm Than Good For News Sites
02/12/2004 05:00 PM
We've been discussing news site registration lately, and Digital Deliverance has a piece where they explain why it's likely to backfire for almost all sites who try it. As we were just saying last week, sites that require registration and/or demographic info tend to get many fewer visitors and a ton of bogus data. As the Digital Deliverance piece points out, most sites aren't even doing anything with that dirty data - so it's completely useless. They're getting fewer visitors and bad data they don't even use for any reasonable purpose. This certainly doesn't help them get more advertising, but the fewer readers does mean they'll get less advertising. Doesn't seem like such a smart strategy - and yet more sites seem to be doing it every day.

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AM
The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.
