Red Hat frees Fedora project
06/05/2005 11:36 PMMark Webbink, deputy general counsel for Red Hat, announced in his
keynote address this morning at the Red Hat Summit that Red Hat is
freeing the Fedora project from its direct control. Red Hat has
created the Fedora Foundation -- to be run by an independent board of
directors -- which will direct and control the project from now on.
Webbink said Red Hat made this move because it listened to the Fedora
community when it said it would be more comfortable about the project
if it were not directly owned by a commercial firm.

Red Hat frees Wide Open
05/16/2004 12:24 PMFor all of the FUD that some are eager to spread about Free Software
and Open Source, the real truth is that the purveyors of such tripe
are truly fearful that you might learn the simple object lesson: a
long and happy life is filled with learning. They want you to believe
that you are too ignorant to understand new ideas, and that your
capacity for learning has eluded you. They need you to believe that
you are too lazy to make an effort to think for yourself. Don't buy
that idea, for it is nothing more than an abdication of your
obligations. Try to learn something new every day, no matter how
small, for it will sharpen your mind and rejuvenate your spirit.

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PMLast week we noted a new study saying that
people get
annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear
one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made
sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring
to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the
reason for the annoyance
is that it
shows that we're more curious about what the other party is
saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's
the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of
curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when
loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go
against the opinion many people have expressed that things like
"push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would
be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation.
In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that
mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more
phones to make them
less annoying. Of course, the study only
set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a
face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone
situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the
annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language
to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

IBM Frees Cloudscape Into The Open
Source Skies...
08/03/2004 01:43 AMThere are plenty of sites that cover various "open source" news
stories that we usually avoid around here, but it's worth noting that
IBM has decided to
release the
source code for the Cloudscape Java database technology that they
own. Obviously there are already some very popular open source
databases out there, but the fact that IBM is donating a fairly large
product into the open source world shows that they seem to understand
at least some of the benefits of open source, while other companies
still continue to insist there's something evil about open source
technologies. Recognizing that (a) the product isn't central to their
strategy and (b) more active development around it may
drive more
demand for their own Websphere offering, it makes perfect sense to
open source Cloudscape (now to be known as Derby). It would be nice
if more companies began to realize that not everything they've worked
on needs to be sold. If it can be used as a form of a promotion that
drives more sales for other products, that can often be a very
intelligent strategy.
