The teaches of peaches 06/05/2005 11:42 PM

Xeni Jardin:
Snip from instructional caption for the lethal "MONKEY STEALS THE PEACH" move: "Followers of the Iron Hand styles immediately clench their fists tightly, with a crushing grip, and jerk the hand sharply back to the near hip, effectively ripping away the genitals. Massive blood loss causes death."

Reader comment: CMorrigu says,

In reference to the "Teaches with Peaches" story about "Monkey Steals the Peach" - the book this was taken from is Ninja Mind Control by Ashida Kim. I've owned this book for many years, and those two pages have always been the highlight. I used to show that section off to people all the time, but then I forgot about it. Thanks to Warren's post yesterday, I dragged the book out and laughed all over again.

Want to know what the difference is between real life and the internet? The funny folk at Red vs. Blue would be happy to demonstate. (Warning: 22.125MB Quicktime .mov file but worth the wait, I thought. The Red vs. Blue site also offers a DivX download.) Metafilterians may enjoy the Political Section, where they do political discussions as badly as we do. One naughty word may make the audio NSFW in some locations. Seen at Bifurcated Rivets.

Science booklet for kids teaches
copyright instead

Science booklet for kids teaches
copyright instead
06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Matt picked up a National Geographic science booklet for kids and discovered that it contains subtle propaganda for copyright maximalism:
"Suppose you have permission to photocopy the picture of Paramecium, and you enlarge it to twice its size. Would the magnification of x110 still be correct? Explain."

Note how it says, "suppose you have permission to photocopy the picture," instead of, "suppose you photocopy the picture," or even, "photocopy the picture."

Derrrrrr. Somehow the issue of copyright infringement has made its way explicitly and incongruously into a children's science booklet.
