Conflict between TopStyle and Microsoft
Fingerprint Reader
02/05/2005 09:08 PMI've recently had a few reports of TopStyle generating an "access
violation" error when it closes, and it looks like the problem is due
to some sort of conflict with the software for Microsoft's new Fingerprint Reader.
If you're using a fingerprint reader and are experiencing this
problem, rest assured that the error message is harmless - you can
simply click OK to dismiss it. However, I do understand that it's
annoying since it apparently happens every time you close TopStyle, so
it is something that needs to be resolved. I've ordered a fingerprint
reader so I can reproduce and hopefully fix the problem.

Microsoft Fingerprint Reader
Update: Conflict between TopStyle and
Microsoft Fingerprint Reader
03/14/2005 06:24 PMEarlier this month I posted about a confl
ict between Microsoft's Fingerprint reader and TopStyle which
caused a harmless (but annoying) error message to appear every time
TopStyle was closed.
Since my initial post, I've installed a Fingerprint Reader (cool toy, btw) and have been
able to reproduce the problem. More importantly, I've located the
line of code where the error occurs. Although I'm stumped as to why
the Fingerprint Reader software is causing the problem, I do have a
fix in place that appears to be working. I plan to keep running
TopStyle with this fix for a few weeks to make sure it's reliable, and
if all goes well I'll make it available to everyone who is
experiencing the problem.

Symantec Facing Problems With Product

Symantec Facing Problems With Product
Activation
10/30/2003 11:46 PMAt least Intuit realized what a waste of time and money it was to put
product activation technology into their software. Once they realized
the pointlessness of it, they issued a
very
public apology on the matter. Unfortunately, other companies
aren't quite so enlightened. Symantec is having
all sorts of trouble with their product
activation technology, that is preventing many legitimate users
from using the software they paid good money for. Symantec is now
saying that they're working on it, but can't figure out what the
problem is, and can't suggest a date when they'll offer a fix. Here's
a simple solution: follow Intuit's lead and ditch the activation
technology altogether. The simple fact is that the software is still
getting pirated. You see offers for it all the time - and it only
takes a hacker a little while to figure it out. So, the only people
this is really impacting are the
legitimate users of your
product - and you're making their lives worse. Most of these people
are going to go to a competitor, and will be quite vocal about why
they would never purchase anything else from Symantec. Thus, it does
nothing to solve the problem, angers your customers, and drives people
to competitors. How does this make sense?
