X-Plane 8.11 Release-Candidate 1 (Beta
branch)
04/08/2005 04:25 AM
Screenshot X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available for personal computers.

This release includes a bunch of new security goodies, such as improved SSL handling with browser-like detection of server certificates, optional client side password hashing, and kerberos support. Otherwise, a number of bug fixes and some internal code refactoring. Ubuntu has been shipping free cd's of its distro for some time now - actually, sets containing a live (Knoppix-like - just boot, no install) CD and a 'regular' CD, for Intel, Apple, and AMD64 architectures. They're in fact shipping *loads* of such cd's - for free - if you go to their shipping page, the default number to order is 10. Probably not a bad way to introduce acquaintances to Linux.

Interface designer Matthew Thomas rips into Ubuntu and GNOME. Most of these complaints can be summarized as "GNOME isn't Mac OS" (no, really?). He's in for some serious frustration if he thinks he can get 15-year-old conventions like menu bars inside windows changed; the GNOME project has had years to copy the Mac but they made a conscious decision not to.
