Contest to produce in-game book based on
Cory's next novel

Contest to produce in-game book based on
Cory's next novel
03/29/2005 02:13 AM
Cory Doctorow: When my next novel Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town comes out this July, I'm going to do an in-game signing and talk in Second Life, the massively mutiplayer online world (I did this before, for Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, and it was really fun!).

To commemorate the event, Second Life's Wagner James Au is coordinating an in-game contest to design a virtual book based on the text of the novel, a digital 3D object wiht turn-able pages, etc. I really hope that what they end up building is more than a simple 3D version of a meatspace book, though: electronic text is so much more protean than printed words, so it would be a shame to constrain it to behaving the way that dumb matter does.

...[F]or the next couple months, in preparation for Cory's appearance, Residents will be creating book prototypes, and submitting them to me for an in-world expo, so the community can choose which one provides the best in-world reading experience. Within 48 hours of the announcement, one Resident had already submitted a screenshot of his own prototype (bottom screenshot), which sharp-eyed readers will recognize as the opening page to Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, the novel he discussed with Residents at the first Book Club. The one to win the most votes at the Expo will get the honor of publishing Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town in Second Life. (Though of course, my personal hope is that this also helps launch a mini-explosion of virtual book technology in-world.)

Merry Christmas, Spymac!

Merry Christmas, Spymac! 12/25/2004 05:20 PM
On Spymac this Christmas, Forums are littered with missed gifts, Bamboozled, glossed-over wish lists With iPod minis and iTrips. For some, the tunes will be rocking, For others, megahertz clocking But what of all of those stockings With neither socks nor a dock nor The shocking bow-wrapped black box With a Power Mac peeking out from Under out of a bounty of wound-up frowns Not an ounce of astoundment, wow or surprise Decline in all shapes and sizes, Stifled cries and replies Of, “Oh, that’s not the right size? Should it have been bigger? White? Pink, blue or green? Did you want the red click wheel Or the new color screen?” It seems the holiday spirit Has gone the way of the Cube It’s presents now that we care about Instead of renewing The vows of tradition and family and love we hold dear, having replaced what were tidings with an endless frontier Of wrapping and ribbon And piles of debt, After two months of sweat There’s no time for regret, It’s Christmas, so let it Be, lest we forget it, If you got the wrong iPod There’s always Apple Store credit. Merry Christmas, from the Spymac News Team

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod 12/02/2003 03:04 AM
When a company is leading a saturated market by several percentage points with a $299 low-end model, most would say there’s little room for improvement. With accolades galore, a corporation enjoying such a position could indeed rest until the gap closes, only to scramble once the competition catches on. Indeed… but those other companies don’t have Steve Jobs as a CEO.
