Putting the Soft Back in Software

Putting the Soft Back in Software

Putting the Soft Back in Software 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

Check out Bill de hÓra’s No More Nails: Making Good Technology Choices. I’m not sure that Bill’s nails-vs-screws metaphor works that well, but he says some really smart things about how enterprise software is done. By the way, Paul Hoffman and I recently appointed Bill co-editor of the Atom Publishing Protocol draft, in preparation for the final charge to the finish line; I expect great things. (Of course, the IETF’s lamentable all-ASCII-all-the-time publishing policy will keep Bill’s name from showing up properly on the cover).

Putting the Genie Back in the Box

Putting the Genie Back in the Box 06/05/2005 10:59 PM

IBM is working with Fox on technology to limit digital television broadcasts to particular local markets. It's a variation on the "broadcast flag" the FCC is imposing on makers of TVs and other digital media devices, but with a twist.

The argument for the flag is that it protects intellectual property, by limiting unauthorized redistribution of digital content. The IBM/Fox technology, on the other hand, protects business arrangements. It's designed, I assume, to preserve local advertising dollars, by forcing users to see content intended for their local markets. Nothing wrong with companies trying to fight change in their markets. What's worrisome is when that battle has government on one side. The danger of the broadcast flag is that it will be the entry point for all sorts of restrictions that have little to do with protecting copyright.

Putting the pieces back together, slowly

Putting the pieces back together, slowly 01/02/2005 04:41 AM
It's been a long strange trip since the election, and I haven't felt much like writing, and recent developments in my life haven't left me much time to write, hence the two month silence. I worked in campaign mode for the month leading up to the election, as part of a fabulous team that Dan Robinson and Henri Poole of CivicActions put together to do online support of Get Out The Vote efforts using AdvoKit! While we had our ups and downs, the biggest down of course being the election results, it was a great experience. I helped build sites like Rock the Vote, Vote All Your Values, Voter Call, and I supported some great kids on Zephyr Teachout's Baobabs Teams in their use of AdvoKit! I was putting in 16 to 20 hour days doing everything from project management to Apache configuration to writing documentation for AdvoKit, and I loved it. It was at least moderately effective as well, 15,000 people registered to use our sites and they recorded more than 110,000 phone calls to newly registered voters in battleground states, which research shows should add up to at least 11,000 additional voters going to the polls and voting against Bush. Of course, it wasn't enough. In spite of massive efforts by groups on the left, we were out-organized by the Republican GOTV operation, as detailed in a recent Washington Post article, and the American people elected as president of the United States a man who condones torture, is borrowing money in our children's name to fund tax breaks for his friends and war on his father's enemies, and who is raping the environment. As you may be able to tell, I took the election hard, which was another reason not to write. Many of my thoughts I am just as happy not to have preserved for posterity. I found consolation in the support of my wonderful family, including a beautifully written note from my conservative father (and Bush 41 government appointee) thanking me and my sister for our efforts to defeat George W. Bush, in the great friends I made working with CivicActions, and the fact that I can at least say, I did my best to elect John Kerry as president of the United States. But great as they are, the consolations make a thin bowl of gruel to subsist on during 4 more years of...

Do We Want Spam Software That Fights
Back?
11/04/2003 01:20 PM
It's no secret that spammers are increasingly using dirty tricks to continue the spread of spam - while also doing their best to annoy anti-spam activists. They've been launching denial of service attacks on just about all anti-spam sites, and recently tricked a registrar into taking away SpamCop's domain name. Some in the anti-spam world are sinking lower themselves and looking at ways to fight back by issuing automatic denial of service attacks against links in spam messages. There are a number of obvious problems with such a plan. First of all, it's illegal. More importantly, though, many anti-spam offerings have been shown to be a little too quick on the trigger, leading to many legitimate messages getting tagged as spam - and folks being hosted on the same servers often found their own email blocked. What happens when a denial of service attack hits one of those servers? Even worse, the spammers will begin to look on this as a tool to do denial of service attacks on their own. They no longer need to infect machines with trojans. Just spam the website they want attacked and the anti-spam tools will do the work for them.

According to analysts, EA has a market capitalization of $18 billion, sales of $2.9 billion and cash of $2.5 billion, and should easily be able to afford Ubi Soft, which has a market value of about $500 million.

Putting the public into PBS

Putting the public into PBS 06/17/2005 03:29 PM

Hey folks at PBS, I hear you're ha ving funding problems. Might I suggest taking a spin around the Web to find content released under a Creative Commons license that you can broadcast for free? The Creative Commons site has a content search engine, as does Yahoo!

It doesn't look like there's a whole lot of video just yet, but Jason Scott has just released his 5 1/2 hour-long documentary series on BBS technology and culture under a Creative Commons license. The series is not going to cost any money to acquire beyond the $50 the 3-DVD set costs and from what I hear, it's an interesting and professionally produced view of a topic that many in your potential audience might be interested in watching.

And perhaps it's time to make the Public Broadcasting Service into just that...media by the people, for the people. A nationwide public access channel that draws the best citizen content from around the country and (this is the important bit) is edited into PBS programming. Or at least take a few hours out of the week for this...I don't want to see Frontline, Sesame Street, Nova, or Newshour with Jim Lehrer taken off the air, but giving the Make magazine gadgeteers a half-hour a week to geek out about hacking stuff seems reasonable. The overall result may feel less professional but a lot more participatory.

Putting Ads On Others' Ads

Putting Ads On Others' Ads 03/30/2005 05:20 PM
A few different sites today are talking about a new service, called Oodle, that lets people do a meta-search for classifieds in specific locations. In other words, you choose the city you live in (they don't offer many yet), and you do a search for "bicycle" and you'll get ads from Craigslist, eBay, the local newspaper and others. It's an interesting idea, but some are wondering about the legality of it. The business model of the company is to put contextual ads along side the results. Deep linking to stories has been shown to be legal (in most places...), but does it get more complicated when you're deeplinking into ads? The obvious answer is that it shouldn't matter at all. Services like this one drive more traffic to the ads, which should make everyone happy. Either way, what's most interesting about this development is that it's, yet another example of how people want advertising that's relevant to them and which they have control over. Classified ads are ads after all. So, is there really a business model in placing contextual, machine generated ads next to ads that people are specifically searching for? It seems like a stretch.

Putting the "fun" in fungi

Putting the "fun" in fungi 12/17/2003 02:46 AM

Just got back from what was easily the best meal I've had in Oregon at the Joel Palmer House. Jack, the founder, is a renowned mushroom expert going way back and searches the local forests for truffles, porcinis, and chanterelles, then serves them up in his meals.

He captured the essence of mushrooms in every dish. The dishes tended towards hearty and earthy flavors but were also a bit heavy and creamy, which is just fine for winter. He toured the dining area at one point and I got to ask him what he serves in the summer and he said "lots and lots of local berries, but the dishes are best eaten when it is cold outside." Their wine list had an impressive chunk of the entire willamette valley region to offer as well.

I really wanted to ask him how risky it was to harvest wild mushrooms specifically to serve customers, but figured it was best to skip that kind of morbid topic at a fine meal ("have you ever served fugu encrusted with death caps?" or "So what are our chances of dying tonight?" probably would have been my questions).

If you go, by all means opt for the "mushroom madness" prix fixe menu which is what I imagine is the closest you could get to judging an Iron Chef battle. There are five courses all based around different mushrooms, then a dessert that includes them as well. The portions started small and light, as they should be, but eventually grew into full sized plates. I had to practically be rolled out of the place by the end.

But it was a great place and an amazing experience that I'll be dragging all my out-of-town visitors to enjoy.

Fresh paint

Fresh paint 07/09/2004 03:38 AM

If you’re reading this in a browser you’ve no doubt noticed that the site looks different. If you’re reading this in a news reader, then you probably don’t care what the site looks like. The previous design has been hanging around for nearly four years, although the details have changed over time.

Many times over the last few years I’ve wanted to redesign this site and several times I’ve actually started on a new design. Each time something has kept me from completing the design and putting it online. Instead, I’ve nursed the old design along, changing elements here and there, refactoring the site and evolving the design.

This time, I didn’t set out to redesign the site. I simply wanted to continue the progression of small improvements. Something I’ve always felt about the design of this site is that the logo wasn’t strongly tied into the rest of the site. The orange hexagons weren’t reflected anywhere but the logo. My plan was to simply add some orange and some angles into the design. Before I knew it, I had completely changed the design of the site.

Although there were some technical problems with the layout and some things about the new design I didn’t like, but overall things seemed to be working pretty well. So I dumped the old stylesheet, tweaked my templates and uploaded the new files. Now I have a new point from which to start my refactoring.

Some of the technical problems have now been solved, but others remain. A portion of the banner at the top overlaps the menu in Opera. That particular problem was introduced after a workaround of an IE/Win CSS bug. Given the numbers of people using Opera on this site, I’m not going to spend much effort fixing the Opera problem.

One problem I’d like to fix is in Safari. The search field and the graphic at the right of the banner both are positioned about 100 pixels too low—but only on pages within my blog...

screen capture of a layout problem in
Safari

The CSS is the same as the rest of the site, so there must be something in the HTML that’s fouling things up. I’ll hunt it down when I get a chance. Safari also won’t let me style the form buttons. I don’t really want to use an image for the submit button for a variety of reasons, so I’ll have to live with the unstyled button.

Poke around the site and let me know if you find anything terribly wrong. If you come across a page with the logo sitting on a white background, it’s using the old template with the new CSS and will be updated eventually. Constructive criticism and suggestions on the design are more than welcome.

Behr paint redux

Behr paint redux 01/07/2004 05:04 PM

Last night my Radio blog stopped working - so I didn't get a chance to post this image from the Behr paint Laszlo app.

It's so cool I decided to make it into it's own post.

Check it out folks - it's truley revolutionary. We all know it can be done.  But they've done it! Laszlo has gone beyond HTML - bringing a whole new world of possibilities to the web.  You'd be wrong in not checking out Laszlo. It was important for Macromedia to rip off and copy.

:-)

Laszlo combined with FOAF combined with blogging, with a little eCommerce and IM thrown in for fun - is gonna rock teh house in 2004!

More Interaction Equals More Value.

More Interaction Equals More Value

"A new generation of development tools is emerging for building dynamic, highly interactive Web applications with rich-client interfaces incorporating data, graphics, audio, and video. ... Analysts at research firm IDC predict this segment will make up a big part of the $3.1 billion portal market by 2006, as the future of Web applications will likely be rich-client interfaces using Web services to connect to powerful Java and .Net applications running on back-end servers." -- Information Week

Today's article by Rick Whiting highlights the Behr Paint web experience developed and deployed using the Laszlo Presentation Server. Rich internet applications are gaining momentum with analysts and press, as more great user experiences are enabled by this next generation technology. The article also mentions the wonderful Ben & Jerry's cones to cows created with Macromedia tools and another Laszlo app, the Howard Dean events calendar. [Sarah Allen's Weblog]

I've been waiting a while to tell you all about the Laszlo Behr paint app.  It's totally coolio, but I wanted someone else ot discover it first.

Go to www.behr.com and check out the ColorSmarts app.  Choose colors, which are automatically complemented - in various ways.  then see those colors applied to a particular kind of room.  Now alter the colors.  Any color: main, highlight or trim.  It's actually fun to do!

Paint the whole 'lith with a rainbow... 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Right. That's it. Enough already! I'm just going to go and launch the damn thing and let everyone else find all the bugs and the crappy bits of code and the hacked together bits of shit and I'll fix em all later when I've had a bit of a break. Otherwise it's going to suck up every last bit of my life forever as I fiddle and fuss around some of the obscurer areas when I should be throwing enough people at it and see how many land on something spiky.

So with that in mind, I'm here to announce the 87% complete new version of Barbelith - the online community that actually doesn't just talk shit all day (although it does that too). As ever with a redesign it's got a good few rough edges that will get worn into shape over time. Unlike most redesigns that I've been involved with it's also full of really bad code and there are places where the new lick of paint could do with a couple of more coats. But then again, unlike most commercial redesigns of any scale, this one took four weekends from start to finish. I am sooo looking forward to going outside again. Anyway - have a poke around - be nice to the locals and feel free to leave your thoughts:
