Sydney Might Have 100 Mbps Wireless
Broadband Coverage
04/29/2004 07:38 AMSydney, Australia, WISP Unwired plans 50 by 60 kilometer coverage at
100 Mbps for 95 percent of Sydney: The company is signing up resellers
and will install 63 towers at a cost of Aus$33 million by July. This
all sounds somewhat unrealistic except that the firm has apparently
already raised a fair amount of money and has its plans quite
advanced. (Perhaps it's a fluke of the Australian market, but I don't
understand how a firm raised money without a plan just by using a
shell listed company to avoid the IPO process.) The article muddles
terminology enormously, which isn't unusual when new technologies
appear. The journalist writes, Unwired's 802.16 standard-compliant
Ultra Wideband (WiMax) network... Ultrawideband (UWB) is a
short-range, high-speed technology. 802.16a is the standard underlying
WiMax which has no final spec yet nor a certification program in
place. The last graf is somewhat mystifying: It has been reported that
Intel is involved in the WiMax Forum certification group, an
international 802.16 fixed broadband wireless access standard lobby
group. Intel has not been hiding its interest, and WiMax may lobby but
it's mostly about certification and education, from what we can tell
so far....

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PMAaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports
about a
scam
claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but
that. The company in question is really just offering one of those
silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by
caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband
at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's
also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you
need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise
intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make
outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those
who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which
point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of
broadband knowledge would know were false.

John Shirley comments on Scientific
American article about "Tyranny of
Choice"
04/26/2004 01:00 PMWriter John Shirley has some interesting things to say about a new
Scientific American article called "
Tyranny of Choice"
(paid subscription required to read article, you can read more about
the article on
Alternet.)
They suggest there are two basic types of choosers,
Maximizers and Satisficers. The former aim to make the best possible
choice in a near obsessive way, the latter tend to settle for 'good
enough'. Maximizers spend a long time shopping, can't make up their
minds what to buy for a gift, channel surf like a cokehead searching
through the rug for fallen powder...
Maximizers in particular
are prone to unhappiness in our society--there are too many choices,
just too damn much input in general, and they can't deal with it.
Satisficers are having a hard time too; they tend to go to lower
stress options--and those are harder to find. But they're less likely
to be depressed and suicidal.

The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN
The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN
02/11/2004 02:35 AMAre America Online (TWX ) and Microsoft's (MSFT ) MSN relevant in the
broadband era? The two online services' latest packages, AOL 9.0 for
Broadband and MSN 9, try to make a case but manage no more than
partial success. AOL's broadband offering is the richer and better
integrated of the two, but I'm left wondering if either is worth the
expense.
