Apple will announce Monday that it intends to transition to Intel’s architecture over the next few years, according to reports.

Apple to switch to Intel chips!

Apple to switch to Intel chips! 06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors. Apple has been using PowerPC chips to power their Macintosh line of computers since 1994. But according to CNET, Apple is scheduled to announce this Monday at their Worldwide Developer's Conference their intention to make the switch.

Those who remember the migration from the 68k series chips back in the early 90s may recall that it took some doing. To run at optimal speeds, software has to be recompiled to the native chipset. Migrating to a totally different platform such as PowerPC to Intel will be a significant upheaval.

When Apple announced their move to IBM's next-generation PowerPC chipsets (now in the G5) some pundits have long made the argument that Apple can't ship enough computers to remain competitive on both price and performance with computers powered by Intel-compatible CPUs. Simply put, economies of scale were working against Apple in the long-run.

According to a CNET source, what may have spurred the change was just that -- IBM's concerns about making a low-volume chip that competes with x86's in performance in the same price-range. The question is, can the Mac survive a transition from the PowerPC to Intel-based CPUs with the corresponding software compatibility/optimization issues?

“What makes a Mac a Mac isn’t the processor under the hood,” writes Walt Mossberg for the Wall Street Journal. “It’s Apple’s elegant operating system, [Mac] OS X, which won’t see major changes for 18 months, and the company’s stylish hardware designs, which it will continue to produce. When you peer at the screen of the first Intel-based Mac, it will look just like today’s PowerPC Macs, only it should run faster.” [Jun 09, 2005]

Earth shattering: Apple to switch to
Intel in 2006 (Confirmed... Again)
06/05/2005 11:20 PM
According to CNET News, Apple will ditch IBM's line of PowerPC processors in favor of Intel microprocessors. "Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007," asserts CNET. The announcement is expected to be made this Monday during Apple's CEO Steve Jobs' Worldwide Development Conference (WWDC) keynote speech. Update Saturday, June 4, 5pm MST: The Wall Street Journal (registration required) claims to have confirmation of CNET's report: "CNET on Friday reported that Apple would announce the transition plan June 6... An industry executive familiar with the matter, contacted Saturday, verified that schedule." Update Sunday, June 5, 5am MST: Further claims of confirmation come from The Inquirer. Only one more day to go...

Apple *is* switching to Intel chips

Apple *is* switching to Intel chips 06/17/2005 03:29 PM

The WWDC keynote just ended (notes here and here) and the news is pretty big in Apple land: Apple is switching to Intel chips (press release). A few notes:

  • As speculated here and on Slashdot, Intel will not be making PowerPC chips for Apple.
  • Intel will be making x486 chips for Apple.
  • For the last 5 years, every copy of OS X has been compiled on both PowerPC and Intel platforms. This apparently is the long-rumored Marklar project.
  • Jobs says developing apps to run on Intel Macs is easy...there's a checkbox in the developer tools that "makes a cross-platform single binary". Demo of Mathematica running on an Intel Mac from a guy from Wolfram...it only took them two days [some sources are now saying two hours, not days] to port it to Intel.
  • Running PowerPC-compiled programs on an Intel Mac will be handled through emulation. Gold star to John Gruber for guessing this one.

I'm sure there's more, but those are the important bits. And I know this is Steve Jobs talking to us here, but from where I'm sitting (across the country, reading paraphrase transcripts), the transition has been well prepared for by Apple for a number of years and looks like it will happen a lot more smoothly than all the over-the-weekend hand-wringing indicated that it would.

Update: Dave Winer is reporting that:

1. Apple is not going into the software business, their operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent Windows from running on their hardware.

Update #2: From news.com:

After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said.

I ntel recalls flawed chips less than a week after launch: Good for them that they handled this better than the last time they had this problem.

Less than a week after the launch, Intel said Friday it's recalling some of its latest chip sets after the discovery of a manufacturing flaw that could cause computers to crash or fail to boot.

Most of the problem chips were still in the hands of computer and motherboard manufacturers, said Bill Calder, an Intel spokesman.
