Office Depot offers to recycle electronics for free: This is a Very Good Thing. I'm not an Earth-muffin or anything, but old electronics do some really crappy things to the environment.

Don't be so quick to toss out your old PCs, fax machines or digital cameras — office supply retailer Office Depot is offering to recycle one electronic product a day for free all through the summer, according to a published report Tuesday. [...]

The offer includes all brands of electronics, and products including computer monitors, digital cameras, copiers, fax machines, cellphones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and TVs that are 27 inches or smaller, the report said.

"One product a day" means one product per person per day.

"That's the kind of demographics we're talking about," said Kent Tenney, who three years ago approached economic development groups in northern Wisconsin about starting Longrun.org, a non-profit venture dedicated to recycling, refurbishing, and building computers that would use Linux and open source software in rural northern Wisconsin.

AbiWord - Free Word Processing Program

AbiWord - Free Word Processing Program 06/22/2005 02:48 AM

AbiWord Free Word Processing Program
http://www.abisource.com/

AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft® Word. It is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, memos, and so forth. AbiWord has been created by a worldwide group of volunteers and currently supports many languages and operating systems. AbiWord is GNU Free Software software, which means that you will always have the freedom to use it, make copies of it, and improve it. You are
encouraged to make use of these freedoms and share the program with your family and friends! Like most Open Source projects, AbiWord started as a cathedral, but has become more like a bazaar. AbiWord is part of a larger project known as AbiSource,
which was started by the SourceGear Corporation. The goal of the project was the development of a cross-platform, Open Source office suite beginning with AbiWord, the project's word processor. AbiWord is unique among word processors in its drive to become a fully cross-platform word processor. Our source code is carefully written so that AbiWord will run on virtually any operating system with a minimum of time spent on porting. This combined with our support for internationalization (the ability to run AbiWord in many languages) gives AbiWord a massive potential user-base. Apple Continues Their Program To Hook
Students With Free iPods

Apple Continues Their Program To Hook
Students With Free iPods
07/20/2004 02:45 AM
Hot off the severely overhyped announcement concerning the latest iPod models (er... honestly, they look pretty similar to the old ones) Slashdot has the story that Duke University is giving away "free" iPods to incoming freshman (which won't make the upperclassmen happy, but what can you do?). The "free" is a bit of a misdirection, because most people attending Duke are paying an awful lot of money for the privilege, and I'm sure a slight tuition bump to pay for the iPod will mostly go unnoticed. Of course, this isn't the first time this has been done. Last year we wrote about students at Georgia College & State University receivi ng iPods donated by Apple. While both cases talked about the educational uses of such devices, it's more likely an attempt by Apple to get people hooked early, so when they make big announcements about iPods that really don't seem all that different than the last ones, these kids have to go out and spend their money on them. It's the same strategy Napster is using in signing up colleges.
