Advanced EFS Data Recovery (or simply AEFSDR) is a program to recover (decrypt) files encrypted on NTFS (EFS) partitions created in Windows 2000. Files are being decrypted even in a case when the system is not bootable and so you cannot log on, and/or some encryption keys (private or master) have been tampered. Besides, decryption is possible even when Windows is protected using SYSKEY. AEFSDR effectively (and instantly) decrypts the files protected under all versions of Windows 2000 (including Service Packs 1, 2 and 3). [Shareware $99.00 30 days 890 KB]

Florida Lost Electronic Voting Data

Florida Lost Electronic Voting Data 07/28/2004 01:06 PM
The electronic voting story keeps getting worse and worse -- especially in, of all places, Florida. We've already mentioned how Florida's e-voting machines had audit trails that didn't match the actual vote totals and how Florida has a law prohibi ting recounts for electronic voting machines. Now, the news comes out that, despite being required by law to keep the data from the machines for 22 months, election officials in Miami-Dade county admit that a hard-drive crash has wiped out the data from some electronic voting machines used in the 2002 election and there's simply no record of the votes any more. They quickly point out that all the votes were (probably) counted at the time of the election, but (of course) there's really no way to make sure that's true at all. It's also not the real point. This is highlighting (once again) how unreliable these machines are, and without any kind of paper trail, there's simply no way to go back and make sure that (a) the votes were counted (b) they were counted accurately and (c) they can be counted again.

Have People Lost A Fighting Spirit
Against Spam Or Is Pew Faking The Data
Again?
04/11/2005 05:58 AM
According to the folks at Pew (who are suffering from a credi bility hit these days), people are growing accustomed to spam. It still annoys people to no end, but it's just become so common that people have given up thinking about it or fighting against it, and just think of it as an annoying fact of life, like traffic. Of course, it's not really clear that the data actually says this. Basically, this conclusion appears to be driven by two stats: (1) people trust email less but (2) they're not reading less email -- sort of. The study actually says 22% of people say they are spending less time on email because of spam, which is down from 29% the year before. However, it's a bit of a stretch to conclude from this one data point that people are resigned to spam. It could mean that email simply has become more important in other aspects. Or, it could mean that most of the people who were really annoyed by spam decreased their email usage last year instead of this year. The problem with the data is that you can't really compare the rate of change this year to last year, because (obviously) they're starting from a different position. Most importantly, this could just be an indication that spam filters have become more effective. It wouldn't be surprising to find out that many people have become resigned to spam -- but the data shown here doesn't actually seem to prove that at all.

They announced these things back in September of 2004, and have kicked the release date back twice. The "(High-Speed)" in the name indicates the cards have a transfer rate of 80Mbps (10MB/sec), which is far more than you'll ever need for anything practical.
