Keith Chen studies capuchins. 06/05/2005 11:11 PM

Monkey Business Something else happened during that chaotic scene, something that convinced Chen of the monkeys' true grasp of money. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of money, after all, is its fungibility, the fact that it can be used to buy not just food but anything. During the chaos in the monkey cage, Chen saw something out of the corner of his eye that he would later try to play down but in his heart of hearts he knew to be true. What he witnessed was probably the first observed exchange of money for sex in the history of monkeykind. (Further proof that the monkeys truly understood money: the monkey who was paid for sex immediately traded the token in for a grape.)

Tipped off by a recent comment, I tuned into MSNBC at 9PM in the hopes of seeing that Edison wax cylinder blooper. Sure enough, they played it a few minutes ago. "Thank you, Mr. Host." What?! I'll make more for you, if you'd like. Give me a few months - and you'll know my name next time....

"Rance" unmasked as
cartoonist/filmmaker/screenwriter Keith
Thomson?
06/01/2004 04:56 PM
David Emery, of About.com's Urban Legends and Folklore department, tells BoingBoing, "Wanted to let you know that Alex Boese of the Museum of Hoaxes may well have solved the Rance mystery with some good, old-fashioned Net detective work, or at any rate is damn close to solving it."

Here's a snip from the Museum of Hoaxes post, which -- true or not -- evidences some very thorough sleuthing indeed:

I think Rance is a cartoonist/filmmaker/screenwriter named Keith Thomson. Here's my reasoning. What immediately struck me about Rance's weblog was that it attracted a very high number of comments from very early on. Within two hours after Rance posted his first entry on December 29, 2003, four people had left comments on his site. Most weblogs, by contrast, struggle to get anyone to read them, let alone leave comments. So how was he attracting so many visitors to his site straight off the bat? What I discovered was that immediately after Rance posted his first entry on Dec. 29 at 4:49 EST, someone going by the screen name 'InvaderFromPluto' began posting messages about his weblog on various fan discussion groups. For instance, at 5:52, about one hour after Rance had posted his first entry, a message from InvaderFromPluto appears on Yahoo's thematthewperryplace message board. It reads:

i read slate reported a famous tv actor keeping a weblog under pseudonym "rance" at http://captainhoof.tripod.com/blog/ it's hard to know if it is him, but it might be as it is funny and seems witty in his sort of way

Obviously Slate hadn't written anything about Rance's weblog. Rance's weblog, at that time, was only an hour old. So how did InvaderFromPluto know about Rance's weblog so quickly, and why was he so interested in promoting it? Perhaps InvaderFromPluto was Rance himself. Makes sense to me.

P2P studies say that it's not hurting
music
03/28/2005 07:32 PM
Cory Doctorow: Copyfight's Alex Wexelblat has a doozy of an editorial on the pseudoscience behind claims that P2P is costing the music industry money:
...[E]very study that has been done since Napster has shown that music sharing has no negative effects on music sales (CD or downloaded). In fact, some show a positive effect. If that message got into the public consciousness the Cartel would be much worse off. Therefore, they've done all they can to frame the debate in terms of their scares, not science. So we have the scene - surely worthy of Beckett - in which a certified class of 27,000 songwriters and music publishers will argue against Grokster, as Tony Mauro put it on law.com "casting it as a life-or-death struggle over theft of their means of livelihood."

There's just one eensy weensy problem here - NOBODY's livelihood is being stolen. It's just not happening. There were no WMD in Iraq, there was no cocaine on that boat (*), and music sharing does not cost artists money.

The multilingual internet: new studies

The multilingual internet: new studies 12/02/2003 03:08 AM

The new issue of the Journal for Computer-Mediated Communication explores emergent language practices in email, text messaging , newsgroups , and instant messenger ( IM ).

The multilingual Internet raises a number of practical and scholarly questions, ranging from the distinctive features of email or chat in languages with specific font-related requirements, to code-switching in bilingual or multilingual online communication, to the effects of the English language and global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on [computer-mediated communication] in local languages. Linguistic research has shown that spoken languages vary in their structures, meanings and usage—is this equally true on the Internet, where speakers of different languages come into contact and influence one another on a scale never before imagined?

Topics include Arabic and Greek scripts transformed into ASCII text by instant messenger, the spread of English , and gender empowerment in chat .
