Cigarettes kill...bad guys

Cigarettes kill...bad guys

Cigarettes kill...bad guys 06/05/2005 11:10 PM

The Financial Times reports that India is going to start pixellating cigarettes in movies to avoid glamorizing them. Alternatively, they may run health warnings on screen whenever a cigarette appears. Doesn't the Indian government know that in American movies smoking is a sure sign that you're a bad guy/gal whose comeuppance will come long before lung cancer can take hold? The regrettable exception are action heroes who substitute not shaving and smoking for acting talent....

If you're in LA this Saturday evening, check out this new show opening at sixspace -- new works by LA artists Me gan Whitmarsh and R achell Sumpter. If you're not in LA, dig the preview online. I'm particularly fond of this series of images form Whitmarsh, shown here-- gallery co-founder Caryn Coleman tells me they're the result of a dream the artist had that Kermit the Frog was in her house, hanging out and doing origami. The pieces depict -- well -- Kermit the Frog hanging out in someone's house, doing origami. Snip from press release:

"Whitmarsh will present her exquisite embroidery on fabric pieces that combine this traditional medium with depictions of elements in pop-culture such as yetis and battling elf girls. While the size of her work ranges from small to large, her characters remain tiny and detailed, forcing the viewer to literally peer into her worlds. Sumpter, part of the new school of illustration, will be exhibiting paintings on paper using gouache, ink and watercolor. Her work has been described as '...delicate ink lines, and subtle attention to detail complement and subvert the lightness of her drawings' and her 'icon-like imagery resembles... children's books found in antique stores, but with a modernist composition and adult subject matter'."

I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

Five guys talking 06/01/2004 03:38 PM
Tim Bray raises some good questions about last week's Gillmor Gang episode:
First of all, a transcript would be so much better; I don't have an hour to listen and if I did it would be in my car, and even if I tried, sitting here in my office (even though the audio is excellent) my attention is continually getting pulled away by email or instant messages or red letters in NetNewsWire or whatever. If I'm writing code or a tricky position paper or reading something material or even just thinking about a hard problem I can tune out the distractions no problem, but four guys talking? The mind wanders. [ongoi ng]
I agree. Doug Kaye is working on providing transcripts, but it's a hard problem and a thankless chore. Meanwhile, I've been exploring a middle-ground approach. I went through the first half of the show, in which various aspects of service-oriented architecture were batted around, and added a layer of indexing and annotation. The result: this SMIL presentation for the Real player. Note: Clicking an index link will seek in the audio stream and synch the annotations panel, but (at least for me) won't always actually play the audio at that location unless you click again. (Annoying. Why is that?) ...

Geeks Aren't Just Guys 03/06/2004 02:05 AM
For those who still think tech hounds and gadget fiends are limited to the male half of the population, think again. A new study shows that, at least in the US, young men and women adopt new technologies equally. They even spend the same amount of time playing online games - though, they're probably different types of games for the most part. Men are more likely to own a game console and an MP3 player, but women are more likely to own a mobile phone - which probably does fit with the traditional stereotypes.

Can the little guys hande the pressure?

Can the little guys hande the pressure? 04/09/2005 11:57 AM
It may not have the visibility of Macworld or the anticipation of a special press event, but on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, all eyes will be on Apple. And if history is any indicator, the immediate future of the company is at stake. Wednesday represents the day when Apple will report its second-quarter earnings, the first such report since the stock split after hitting an all-time high. Currently, the stock is treading at around $44 (or $88 in pre-split-adjusted pricing) and hasn’t budged much since the Feb. 18 division. The furthest it has dipped is $39, and it has yet to break its $45.44 high. Which isn't to say it hasn’t seen its share of activity. On Friday, in fact, AAPL was the seventh most active stock, despite gaining just 18 cents. Investors seem to be split themselves on how the company will fare in the coming months. The good news? Apple hasn't revised its second-quarter outlook, which was forecast to see revenue of just under $3 billion and earnings per diluted share of 20 cents. (Wall Street expects slightly higher results of $3.2 billion and 23 cents a share.) But here's where Apple's reputation precedes it. Aside from the usual profit-takers following the great divide, a split is designed to make an astronomical stock more affordable for the masses. And traditionally, this is what happens. Apple, on the other hand, has seen nothing but bad luck in the months following a stock split, the worst of which came in 2000, culminating with a single-day drop of $27.75 just three months after the split. Of course, there was no iPod then. Nor a Mac mini. Nor the iTunes Music Store or Mac OS X. But just as these innovations have propelled Apple to fame and fortune, they could spell its downfall, much like the iMac and Power Mac G4 Cube in 2000. For one, the Mac mini — which has dropped out of the Apple Store Top Sellers list — has a lot riding on it. Apple has yet to offer any estimates and Wall Street seems to think sales will be impressive, largely due to this so-called "iPod halo effect." And the shuffle, also expected to post dazzling numbers, doesn't quite have the same profit margin as its bigger brothers: More than twice as many shuffles need to be sold to equal the mini’s revenue. Plus, it doesn't seem like the iPod is quite as popular as it was last year. But that remains to be seen. Apple's second quarter is always its most difficult. The weeks following the holiday buying season rarely see much in the way of sales, and with no major holidays to count on and a year's worth of advertising to budget for, it's difficult to drum up new business. As usual, Macworld did a fine job of creating buzz early in the quarter, but there hasn't been much else to drum up sales, save slightly revamped iPod and PowerBook lines. No Power Mac, no iMac, no iBook, no Tiger pre-order… (But the third quarter should certainly be something special.) That is, assuming Apple lands on its feet on Wednesday. It's up to Apple two smallest and newest products to carry the weight, lest the stock tumbles and sends Apple back to the drawing board. And all of us back to being underdogs.

So Jason Giambi (likely) has amoebas in his intestines. Funny, this is the kind of potentially fatal illness someone gets when their immune system is weakened by anabolic steroids. A good doctor of a professional athelete is going to tell his patient "if you want to, you know, live through this, stop taking steroids." Maybe that's why Giambi is only hitting .220 and looks like a pale facsimile of his fo rmer self. So given the BALCO investigation and baseball's utter unwillingness to address this issue seriously, how much longer do these guys get away with asking "Who you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?" before a prominent player goes the way of Lyle Alzado? Is it none of our business? Are steroids just part of modern sports?

Every few month or so, there seems to be some random story about how only guys play video games, and how a bigger effort needs to be made to make games for women. Of course, nearly every attempt to target women specifically has failed -- but what people haven't noticed is that women are playing games all the time. In fact, they're considered some of the hardest core gamers, though, more focused on word and puzzle type games. However, that's clearly not all. New studies are showing that as new games become more character driven, instead of kill-everything-driven, women are playing those games as well. As obvious as it seems, it appears the trick to getting women to buy into video games wasn't to make games for women, but to make games for everyone.

Rather than dwelling on the thousands of people who lost their retirement money, it focuses primarily on the the conscious, willing, and intentional fraud Enron's executives executed. The movie takes us step by step through the games the execs played, as if they couldn't believe that anything guys as smart as them did could possibly be wrong. These were first class bastards. Yahoo Matches With MusicMatch

Yahoo Matches With MusicMatch 09/14/2004 12:29 PM
Yahoo continues its buying streak, with the latest deal showing that Terry Semel hasn't forgotten his entertainment roots. The company is shelling out $160 million for MusicMatch, a popular player in the digital music space that hasn't done quite as well lately. For a while, MusicMatch was one of the most popular client applications on Windows machines for managing MP3 collections. More recently they offered a subscription service that won strong reviews. A few years ago, MusicMatch provided the only client side app on Windows machines that would work with the iPod, but once iTunes for Windows was written, Apple shoved MusicMatch aside, making them something of a has-been in the space. The deal with Yahoo is less about their client software than the number of subscribers they bring -- which basically doubles the number of subscribers to Yahoo's Launch music subscription service. Of course, given some of Yahoo's track record with acquisitions lately, they'll simply swallow this one up, rather than using it as a way to really jump ahead of the competition with a more advanced service.
