New Gumstix Linux SBC Under $100 06/05/2005 11:13 PM
A LinuxDevices article says a new version of the Gumstix microcontroller has been released with a price tag of $99. The new gs200f board includes an Intel XScale PXA255, 64 MB of SDRAM, 4 MB flash and an MMC slot. The board shares the tiny 20mm x 80mm size of the other, more powerful Gumstix boards. All Gumstix boards come ready to run with Linux and a complete GNU gcc tool chain. There are now a pretty wide selection of Gumstix expansion boards with all sorts of I/O and, coming soon, they will have a specialized expansion board for robotics called the Robostix.

Gumstix Microcontroller 01/29/2004 02:47 AM
A couple of readers have submitted links to gumstix, a homebrew microcontroller based on the Intel PXA255 XScale CPU. The board is 20mm x 80mm, has 64MB SDRAM, 4MB of Flash, draws 200ma at 3.6-5v and runs Linux. At present, the site only has a brief description and a photo but it sounds like the creator may be releasing the design as Open Hardware soon. Slashdot also carried a story on the gumstix board today.

EETimes on Gumstix Robotics Applications 06/22/2005 02:19 AM
An EETimes article describes the use of a Linux-based Gumstix board as the controller of a UAV based on a model airplane. Owen Holland of the University of Essex doesn't have just one UAV in mind, he's planning on building a swarm of them. We've mentioned the swarm aspect of this project, called Gridswarm, in a previous post. EETimes focuses on the use of the Gumstix controller and Linux to create a sort of flying Beowulf cluster. The article also talks quite a bit about Gumstix and its founder, Gordon Kruberg who has worked on robotics projects for a long time.

John Lautner's Chemosphere: part

Modern.
04/07/2005 12:53 PM
The most modern home built in the world. "From the outside it looks like a spaceship you cannot enter. But if you go inside, it feels very cozy… very Zen and calming. Maybe because you are floating above the city, in the sky". John Lautner's Chemosphere residence is the product of a fortuitous union of architect, client, time and place. Leonard Malin was a young aerospace engineer in late-1950s L.A. whose father-in-law had just given him a plot north of Mulholland Drive, near Laurel Canyon. The only catch: at roughly 45 degrees, the slope was all but unbuildable. Lautner sketched a bold vertical line, a cross, and a curve above it. "Draw it up," he told his assistant. Now publisher Benedik t Taschen owns Chemosphere (NSFW), and after 20 years of neglect the house has been beautifully restored (.pdf) by Frank Escher.

Mac testing

Mac testing 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

For the last 6 months I’ve thought about getting a used Mac for testing Web sites with it. The Mac I used to use for this purpose has become more difficult to get access to. I’m able to get a reasonable estimation of what Safari will show by using Konqueror on Linux, so I’ve held off on the purchase so far.

In today’s I-Design Digest, moderator Veronica Yuill provides a link to iCapture, a service that will show you a screenshot of any URL in Safari. The page says it’s available for Mac IE as well, but I couldn’t find a way to create an IE screenshot. I imagine that will be added soon. iCapture isn’t as full-featured as BrowserCam and it doesn’t provide screens for as many systems, but unlike BrowserCam, iCapture is free.

It looks like iCapture’s creator Dan Vine has got a couple of Macs sitting in his apartment that take screenshots and put them on the Web using a combination of AppleScript and Python. I’ve got to get around to playing with Python. All the cool kids know Python.

And while I’m mentioning all this, I don’t suppose anyone has some older Mac hardware that they’d want to part with cheap? I don’t need to run OSX or any high-performance apps. I mainly want to test sites in IE.
