What Our Web Searches Say about Us

What Our Web Searches Say about Us 08/21/2004 05:05 AM
What Our Web Searches Say about Us

Over two-thirds of those polled by Harris Interactive and MSN feel Web searches are the fastest way to find information, though what they are searching for varies widely. Whether because of curiosity, boredom or perhaps the need to find someone from one's past, many people use search engines to find out about the activities and whereabouts of friends, family and ex-boyfriends or girlfriends (the practice is widespread enough that it has acquired a name — "googling" someone — though the sponsor of the survey, MSN, probably hopes to change that with its recently revamped search engine). The most popular person-search of all, however, is users looking up themselves.

You know you just cannot get away from that EgoBot thing ;-)). This will be added to a number of my speeches available from Internet Speaker.

Google URL Searches

Google URL Searches 09/07/2004 10:24 AM

Here's a handy trick with Google: "inurl" searches. You can search for a text string in just the URLs of Google's index.

For instance, I wanted to know what content management system a certain site used. All of the site's URLs had the same patten ("/cgi-bin/b7/..."). This search in Google...

inurl:cgi-bin/b7/

...produced a list of pages with this same URL pattern. From there, it wasn't hard to find one that referenced their platform: Bazaar< /a>.

Handy.

Tired? Need a boost? Everything you ever wanted to know about one of America's favourite energy boosters. This website contains 25 pages covering the history, uses (both legitimate and illegitimate), and biological characteristics of cocaine and the coca plant. An interesting read for those with time to kill (like me). Possibly NSFW.

New York retail prescription drug prices. New York [USA] has a state law requiring pharmacies to keep and provide a Drug Retail Price List for the 150 most commonly prescribed drugs. The NY State Attorney General's Office collects that information monthly and makes it searchable by zipcode, city or county. The stark comparisons show that even within one region, retail drug prices can vary by as much as $120, or 50%. With five million New Yorkers uninsured and having to buy their medications at retail prices, this is a handy new tool.

Real Reason the Government Won't Debate Legalization of medical cannabis and industrial hemp re-legalization? Since reading the previous AARP FPP and an article about how DEA Ruling Renders Federal Approval of Medical Marijuana Impossible while the Supreme Court weighs marijuana as medicine, I found the historical perspective in "Real Reason" about how the current state of insanity quite enlightening... and not too hard to believe. “The technology is designed as a major search improvement for users trying to grapple with an increasing amount of digital information, offering a single hunting system instead of several different search engines, file management systems or other tools. Microsoft’s Windows operating system, which is on 90 percent of personal computers, provides tools for file management on PCs. But Mehdi conceded it doesn’t have a quick system for searching.”
