AP - Pat Sajak and Vanna White know where they stand in history. It's been more than two decades since Sajak, 58, and White, 48, joined the "Wheel of Fortune" game show. But the co-hosts who so perfectly synchronize the motions of spinning the wheel and turning the letters say this will be the last stop in their careers.

Waiting for the sunset ... at 9:30 pm

Waiting for the sunset ... at 9:30 pm 12/27/2004 08:06 PM

I've arrived at the Hotel Fundador in Santiago, Chile (free wireless in the lobby).  It is difficult to fault Chileans in the department of hospitality.  One of this Weblog's readers, Jorge Tambley, picked me up at the airport on Sunday morning and dropped me off at the hotel.  Then he came back a couple of hours later to invite me to lunch with his wife and kids.  Then he took me to the small airport to hunt for flight schools and onward to the various neighborhoods of Santiago.  Jorge provided some insight into the world of the Chilean computer programmer.  Things seem to be done on a somewhat smaller scale than in the U.S.  The programmer needs to be more in contact with the client, with the users, and more aware of business problems and how to solve them.  Consulting rates and real estate prices are in a more favorable ratio than in the U.S.  A top programmer might earn $70/hour and a newly constructed small condo in Santiago sells for $25,000.  A reasonably nice house is $100,000 and a Las Vegas-style McMansion is $225,000.

With some very kind assistance from Cristian Levy of Amity Tours (http://www.amitytours.cl/) I've begun to sketch out a trip to Valparaiso (Dec 30) and La Serena plus environs (Jan 2-8).

It is 8:30 pm now.  Only about one more hour of daylight...

This picture is of the sun setting over Europe and Africa. Half of the picture is still in day, the other in night. The bright dots you see are the cities lights. The barren area is the Sahara Desert. This amazing picture was taken, via satellite, by the crew on board Columbia during its last mission!! Note how the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona, and how it's still daylight in London, Lisbon, and Madrid.

Microsoft, Macrovision align on copy

Microsoft, Macrovision align on copy
protection
02/01/2005 09:57 PM
Microsoft and copy-protection company Macrovision have struck a deal that will add a new layer of anticopying defenses to video content being swapped between home devices. The two companies said that Microsoft had licensed Macrovision's technology, which aims to stop people from making copies using analog connections between devices, such as those that typically link a set-top box to a television. The deal could make it harder for consumers to make permanent copies of TV shows and movies without permission, if they use computers running the Windows operating system. It should also help convince movie studios and other content producers to release their products in new ways online, the companies said. "We think that long term, the studios will offer more interesting products over the Internet using this technology," said Brad Brunell, Microsoft's general manager of intellectual-property licensing.

I love the vitality that oozes up from the streets of Manhattan (and down into the subways as well, apparently!). Having lived in New York for four years, I don't feel like a visitor any more when I, well, visit there, which makes all the difference in the world.

Manhattan 12/17/2003 02:36 PM
In this place, most people speak more than one language. Almost no one owns a car, even the millionaires. Many people don't even knowsomeone who owns a car. There's no Wal-Mart, no Target, no Home Depot. [...] There's also a deep ethic of civic-mindedness. Average citizens are not just aware of, but actively engaged in efforts such as city planning and zoning laws and the design and preservation of public spaces. Architecture is valued and protected by well-organized, well-financed groups,...

Walking Manhattan

Walking Manhattan 01/03/2005 01:41 AM

In the last New Yorker issue of 2004 (I'm doing some catch-up reading), Ben McGrath has a fun Talk of the Town piece on Caleb Smith, a guy who walked every street on the island of Manhattan over the last year and a half.

The end of the piece mentions Mike Epstein, of the excellent Creative Commons-licensed photography blog Satan's Laundromat. Mike has taken up Smith's peripatetic legacy; he has "so far logged just two dozen miles, but he has plans for one-upmanship. He intends to do Roosevelt Island."
