Drones Scan for Red Tide

Drones Scan for Red Tide 11/15/2003 12:01 AM
Bradenton.com has an article telling how robots are being used to monitor red tide. Red tide is caused by microscopic algae in the sea that bloom into huge populations and put out toxins that can kill fish and can even harm humans. Scientists don't know what causes the outbreak, but and it's very difficult to criss cross the seas to taking samples to monitor toxin levels. Sniffer drones, called Gliders by Mote Scientists have been brought it in to do the tideous job. In the future, they hope to determine what causes a red tide bloom. More information about Red Tide updates can be found here.

Adam is fond of talking about the "Macintosh ecosystem" and how the companies and products that make up that system generally work together for a common good. When a shortcoming is found in Mac OS X, for example, software developers create utilities to address it. In many cases, you get several programs that do the same thing, but with their own unique approaches. Look at the plethora of snippet-keepers (many of which Matt Neuburg has reviewed). A couple years ago, I didn't put much thought into whether such note-taking and -organizing software existed, and now I look for which one offers the features that suit my style of working.

Rural Areas and the Internet
http://ww w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=112

There has been steady penetration of the Internet into rural areas in recent years and more than half of rural
adults -- 52% -- now go online. However, a corresponding rise in the percentage of urban and suburban residents going online has left a persistent gap between rural areas and the rest of the country. Some 67% of urban residents and 66% of suburbanites are online. A new study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project finds that the gap is probably tied to the fact that rural residents as a group earn less and are older than their urban and suburban counterparts.
