uitags: Taglib for Common Webapp UI
Problems
06/05/2005 10:49 PM

uitags is an interesting open source project that tries to package solutions to common webapp UI problems (i.e. blog post/comment input and session timeout) into a taglib. I think what they are doing is valuable but they need to allow developers to try alternate, possibly browser-specific, solutions beside their own.

For example, telling the user that session is about to expire is not very helpful because the user has only three choices, a) do nothing, b) submit incomplete form, or c) manually save incomplete content and then try again.

A more friendly solution monitors user activity to decide automatically whether to transparently rekindle session or save the entered text (without formal submission) using AJAX techniques. If saved, saved input box can be replaced with a friendly message with a link to renew session and content. If saving content scraps at the server is not an option then there are other techniques such as client-side Flash Shared Object storage.

Troubleshooting Common Problems with the

Troubleshooting Common Problems with the
XmlSerializer

The XmlSerializer in the .NET Framework is a great tool to map strongly structured XML data to .NET objects. The XmlSerializer performs the transformations between XML documents and objects in your program with a single API call. The mapping rules for the transformation are expressed in the .NET classes via metadata attributes. This programming model comes with its own class of errors that developers need to learn how to diagnose. For example, the metadata attributes have to describe all variations of an XML format that a serializer can process. This article examines the various errors that can occur when building XML based solutions with the XmlSerializer, and discusses techniques and tools to diagnose them.

"10 Common Problems that Dismiss You as
an Amateur" Writer

"10 Common Problems that Dismiss You as
an Amateur" Writer
01/22/2004 03:14 AM

Are you a writer? Or maybe an aspiring writer? Maybe just a blogger that enjoys writing in your spare time? (That last one is me.) Do you have to write for work? Maybe you're not going to ever be a novelist, but if you write for any reason and you have to persuade people with the written word, then you have to read this article:

Ten Mistakes Writers Don't See (But Can Easily Fix When They Do)

  1. Repeats
  2. Flat Writing
  3. Empty Adverbs
  4. Phony Dialogue
  5. No-good suffixed
  6. The 'to-be' words
  7. Lists
  8. Show, Don't tell
  9. Awkward Phrasing
  10. Commas

The point to the List above is that even the best writers make these mistakes, but you can't afford to. The way manuscripts are thrown into the rejection pile on the basis of early mistakes is a crime. Don't be a victim.

You won't be sorry if you do. Your readers might be sorry if you don't.
