Maintaining my Blogroll in NetNewsWire12/06/2003 02:15 PM Peter Rukavina: "My goal was to export my list of RSS subscriptions

where I could manipulate it at will, including using it to draw this
blogroll page on the fly. The first step is to use AppleScript to

The purpose of these guidelines
is to assist libraries and consortia with implementing and maintaining
virtual reference services. The guidelines are meant to provide
direction, without being over- prescriptive. Variance among
institutions will result in differences in the adherence to these
guidelines, but the committee hopes to have cast the model broadly
enough to provide a framework for virtual reference which can be
widely adopted and which will endure through many changes in the ways
in which libraries provide virtual reference services. Prepared by the

The Difference Between Online Content And Broadcast Content
The Difference Between Online Content And Broadcast Content02/10/2004 02:46 PM Major League Baseball made news last year for claim
ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to
go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in
real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you
can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is
a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to
hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of
games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content
provider paying a huge
upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them
they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course,
the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been
laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not
television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to
their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has
been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it
appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the
interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to
squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans,
which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger
your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to
pick up new fans.

Getting Dreamweaver MX Up to Speed with PHP
Getting Dreamweaver MX Up to Speed with PHP02/07/2003 07:49 PM
Thanks to the hard work of developers, there are plenty of free
and commercial add-ons available for usng PHP with Dreamweaver. In
this article, David McFarland, author of Dreamweaver MX: The Missing
Manual, points you to several extensions that will bring powerful and
useful enhancements to Dreamweaver's PHP features.

Extending PHP with DreamWeaver MX03/11/2003 01:22 AM I prefer to use a text editor to code PHP, but when editing HTML I
prefer DreamWeaver. Macromedia has a whole section on their web-site
dedicated to PHP and Dreamweaver.
An interesting article I found on this site is Building a dynamic

Integrating DreamWeaver and PHP
Integrating DreamWeaver and PHP02/17/2003 08:07 AM Integrating DreamWeaver and PHP
Since this came out a week ago (I feel so behind!), I suspect a lot of
you have seen this but for those that haven't, here's a good article
on DreamWeaver and PHP:
... but MX finally offered a simple tool for rapidly building
database-driven sites using two widely-supported open source
technologies: PHP and MySQL.
Unfortunately, if you've used Dreamweaver MX to build ASP, ColdFusion,
or JSP sites, you'll notice that the program's PHP offerings fall a
bit short. Some standard features, such as password-protecting web
pages, or options for formatting dates and numbers, are missing from
Dreamweaver's PHP server model. To add insult to injury, if you want
to get some of that missing functionality, you'll have to shell out
$99 for Macromedia's Developer Resource Kit Volume 2--an add-on that
also includes new tools for other Macromedia products such as Flash,
Fireworks, and ColdFusion MX.
But there's no need to settle for less, or shell out money for
features that should have come with the program. With a little time
spent browsing the web, you'll be able to bring Dreamweaver's PHP
support up to speed, for free. [_Go_] (emphasis mine)
Note: I'm not a DreamWeaver fan or user as the UI gives me hives so I
can't comment in detail on it but it seems right.
Using CSS in Contribute 3
Using CSS in Contribute 307/19/2004 01:31 AM Manage your site's look and feel with a handful of CSS files.
Macromedia -
Contribute: Contribute 3 is out. Macromedia claims "300
enhancements," but I can't find a list.
There's an impressive list of features here, but it doesn't break out what's new in this version. I
did see some neat stuff that I hadn't seen before, like FrontPage
Extension compatibility, WEBDAV support (which means you could use it
to edit database-based pages), and Flash Paper 2, which apparently now
includes PDF generation.
