More thoughts on Doctor Who and Bad
Wolf...
06/05/2005 10:48 PM

There are a whole ton of theories all over the internet at the moment about all the 'Bad Wolf' references appearing in Doctor Who. In two weeks an episode called "Bad Wolf" will air, and it looks like it's the first part of a two-parter that will end the season. In pretty much every other episode so far there has been a reference to 'Bad Wolf'. So obviously, people are thinking something pretty significant is going to happen. Obviously I have my theory, and again, obviously I have no interest in accidentally spoiling the experience for anyone should I inadvertantly appear to have got it right. So if you want to hear it, view the source and scroll down until you see the hidden comments...

Note added 20:00 pm on Saturday 4th June 2005: In case you hadn't noticed yet, the BBC-owned URL of badwolf.org.uk started working yesterday, full of speculation and suggestions and theories. You might also like to read this thoroughly good weblog post about all the Bad Wolf references and this incredibly spoiler-full message board thread about the next couple of episodes. I'm not completely convinced that my theory is still correct, by the way. Particularly not after the end of the episode I just watched (which totally rocked).

The prez who cried wolf

The prez who cried wolf 08/02/2004 02:02 PM
Is it mere chance that, while the bunting is still being pulled down at the Fleet Center, the nation is galvanized by another threat warning from the Department of Homeland Defense? Or is there, as we're hearing, something truly, definitively different about this threat report -- something, beyond the specificity of the named targets, that distinguishes it from the previous, transparently manipulative Tom Ridge scares?

The only reasonable answer anyone not sitting in or near the Oval Office can provide is, we don't know. And that's precisely the problem the Bush administration has created for the nation.

This morning on NPR I heard Larry Johnson, described as a former counter-terrorism official at the CIA and State Department, debunk the threat report. The information behind this weekend's alert for key financial buildings in New York and Washington -- which, we're told, have been cased by al-Qaida -- apparently came from an al-Qaida communications operative captured by Pakistan in mid-July. If you read this New York Times report on him, you'll learn that the casing of buildings started even before 9/11. Maybe these were al-Qaida's alternate plans for the 9/11 attack itself. Maybe they were considering a follow-up. Maybe the plans were shelved, maybe they weren't. As far as we know, the new information is specific about location but tells us nothing about timing. Which is why the timing of the current warning -- aimed for maximum damping of any post-convention Democratic bounce -- smells so fishy.

Perhaps the Bush administration knows more than we do. But between its weapons-of-mass-destruction debacle and its record of timing bogus scares for maximum politial gain, this gang is no longer in a position to say, "trust us."

Johnson's argument, which the Times report corroborates, is that the Bush administration's warning is a cover-your-ass exercise that does nothing to make us safer but that does help reveal to al-Qaida exactly what our defense preparations look like. Oh, and of course it also helps Bush politically by underscoring his message that Americans need to be very, very afraid and only he can protect us.

Bush, Cheney and Ridge have set up themselves and the nation they are supposed to be protecting in a classic boy-who-cried-wolf situation. Unfortunately, as Johnson observed, there really is a wolf out there, and he's probably quite amused and delighted by all the Bush administration's self-serving alarms.

At a time when more than anything else we need to be able to trust our government, our government has tossed that trust away for a mess of political pottage. Beyond his economy-choking, job-limiting economic policies and his deceptively justified, incompetently executed "war of choice" in Iraq, President Bush has lost credibility in the most basic realm of defense against another 9/11. Which is why throwing this administration out on its ears is a necessary prerequisite to restoring Americans' safety. A government whose word we doubt is a government that can't protect us.

Wolf Claw Type II Keyboard 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

typeII_big.jpgThere was this guy I knew when I was a consultant who would get drunk and make this weird claw thing with his hand an go up to my female friends and say "Da CRRRRRRAW is coming!," but this appears to be nothing like that. The Wolf Claw keyboard is a special FPS input device, a la Belkin's Nostromo, that supposedly improves reaction times or something. It's got left-hand dedicated controls for movement and weapon selection and works silently, which actually is a strike against it. We hackers like our clicky keyboards. I'm wondering what happens if you're need a different keyboard configuration.

Only available in Singapore right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if they brought the CRRRRRRAW to our shores. (Thanks, Frank)

Doctor Who

Doctor Who 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Since giving up cable TV three months ago, I've gotten into the habit of watching old episodes of Doctor Who on my computer. They're cheesy as all hell, but I still love them, especially the Tom Baker-era ones. When my sister and I were growing up, we'd watch them on the local PBS station on the weekends with my dad. They were usually shown on Saturday nights or at noon on Sundays. We'd have popcorn with the late-night viewings and lunch (usually hotdish or tuna hotdish**) with the Sunday afternoon ones. Occasionally they'd have Doctor Who marathons with several episodes back-to-back over the course of the day...loved those. We also had several dozen complete episodes on videotape to watch when PBS pre-empted them with something else.

It's hard to tell how much of my current affection for Doctor Who I owe to those weekends with my dad & sister and how much is due to the show itself. Not that it matters much...I just watch and enjoy and think about those good childhood memories with the Doctor.

** Hotdish, the food of my people, was also our shorthand for my dad's hamburger hotdish (hamburger + tomato sauce + macaroni + spices + (optional) onions & mushrooms). Tuna hotdish was basically canned tuna + Campbell's cream of something (mushroom?) soup + macaroni shells + S&P + a bit of grated cheese on top. Hotdish purists might argue that these dishes were not hotdishes at all because they were prepared on the stovetop and not baked in the oven, but who are they to mess with my fond childhood memories?
