Apple Launches iPod Recycling Program
06/05/2005 11:37 PMApple Computer Inc. launched a recycling program Friday for its
popular iPod, encouraging owners to bring their digital music players

The company has been under siege from environmentalists, who say the
company hasn’t done enough to promote recycling of its products,
which often end up in landfills in the United States and in developing
countries. People who bring their iPods to one of about 100

Slashdot has the
story
that
Duke
University is giving away "free" iPods to incoming freshman (which
won't make the upperclassmen happy, but what can you do?). The "free"
is a bit of a misdirection, because most people attending Duke are
paying an awful lot of money for the privilege, and I'm sure a slight
tuition bump to pay for the iPod will mostly go unnoticed. Of course,
this isn't the first time this has been done. Last year we wrote
about students at Georgia College & State University
receivi
ng iPods donated by Apple. While both cases talked about the
educational uses of such devices, it's more likely an attempt by Apple
to get people hooked early, so when they make big announcements about
iPods that really don't seem all that different than the last ones,
these kids have to go out and spend their money on them. It's the
same strategy Napster is using in
signing up colleges.

Hide Your iPod, Here Comes Bill!
02/05/2005 10:16 PMWired News Story
Microsoft's leafy corporate campus in Redmond, Washington, is
beginning to look like the streets of New York, London and just about
everywhere else: Wherever you go, white headphones dangle from
peoples' ears. To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft's
management, Apple Computer's iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft's
workers.
"About 80 percent of Microsoft employees who have a portable music
player have an iPod," said one source, a high-level manager who asked
to remain anonymous. "It's pretty staggering."
The source estimated 80 percent of Microsoft employees have a music
player -- that translates to 16,000 iPod users among the 25,000 who
work at or near Microsoft's corporate campus.
"This irks the management team no end," said the source.

07/26/2004 09:01 AMCNET: RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod.
RealNetworks announced Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple
Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a
way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
There's good news in this announcement, namely the fact
that Real is forcing a tiny bit more openness on Apple, which has been
trying for a winner-take-all approach to digital music. More choice,
and less lock-in, by these companies is always a good idea.
But Real is no prize when it comes to locking customers into another
box: the one the music industry has created with its insistence on
absolute control over digital music. Real's approach to selling songs
is not that at all: It says you're only renting them. At least Apple
says you (mostly) own what you're buying.
Nonetheless, this is progress of a sort.

Belkin TuneDok iPod Car Holder Review
Belkin TuneDok iPod Car Holder Review
06/11/2004 08:17 AM
Far be it from me
to begrudge anyone the opportunity to tear apart a ridiculous consumer
product, but no matter what the guys at Whining Dog say, I think this
Belkin TuneDok iPod holder is pretty clever. It's basically just a
simple travel holder for your iPod, doesn't do anything terribly
fancy, or electronic, even, but it does have the good graces to slip
comfortably into any available cupholder you have in your car, putting
your iPod at a more comfortable eye-level (hopefully) and saving it
from unsightly scratches.
You might say the $40 price tag sort isn't in line with its overall
usefulness, and you'd be right, but when these things invariably drop
to $9.98 at your local Best Buy, it's not going to look like such a
rip off.

08/27/2004 02:02 PMUntil recently, iPods could receive information only from a computer
-- contacts, calendars, and MP3 files all had to be imported. Now the
iPod can be used as a recording device, too, for directly storing and
playing back audio. You're not going to want to record your band's
demo on your iPod, but if you want to capture close-range interviews
or voice memos, the Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod and the Griffin
Technology iTalk iPod Voice Recorder can get the job done. In the end,
though, the Griffin is our pick, thanks to its better sound quality.
