Site

A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site
05/04/2004 06:25 PM
People are starting to realize that Google is more of a platform than just a search engine. With all the focus on social networks these days, Google still doesn't search in those networks. So, one company is trying to use the power of Google and public websites to build their own open social networking dating site. Basically, they get you to fill out a typical dating profile, which generates some metadata that you include on your own website. Then, they've apparently built out some sort of front-end that uses Google to search sites that include that metadata. What's unclear is how they make sure that Google will index the right sites that include the data. The business model for the company is to show Google's contextual ads along with the results. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how comfortable some people are with putting that sort of info on the "publicly" available web. While it's really not all that different than on a dating site, a dating site at least is somewhat hidden behind a protective barrier, and lets the user hide some of their info.

Not many successful comic strip artists can say they have a degree in physics. Nor can most of them admit that they're successful despite a rudimentary art education. Bill Amend can lay claim to both of those statements, however, and in 2003 his comic strip, FoxTrot, marked its 15th year of stories chronicling the hilarious misadventures of the Fox clan. 2003 brought another milestone as well: three years since Amend's decision to simplify the laborious aspects of comic strip creation with his Mac.

No More ucomics

No More ucomics 07/08/2004 04:02 PM
For some time I’ve been reading Calvin and Hobbes on ucomics.com. But I think I’m going to have to stop, because they are running highly irritating ads that are complete lies. Check out this, but brace your eyes first. Even better, don’t: it’s a violently-flashing yellow-and-black GIF saying Winner! Winner! You just won a free digital camera! Click here!. If you decide, as I did, that it’s worth flaming about and click there at ucomics, you discover that it redirects to a random advertiser, many of which are “Page not found”, none of which offer digital cameras, and which include apparently-respectable firms like ValueClick. I wonder if these people know that offensive, lying ads are being used to link to them? (This piece was originally going to be a flame at them for buying this kind of ad, but then I clicked again). I wonder if respectable cartoonists like Pat Oliphant know that their work is being displayed next to this kind of trash? I wonder if it’s legal to run ads which are outright barefaced lies? Would it be OK for me to put ad banners all over the Internet saying Free Beer! pointing to ongoing? [Disclosure: no free beer here.] What am I missing?

New on the scene is Plasq's Comic Life application which will aid you in turning your comic themed pictures into comic book pages--complete with dialog balloons, "sound" effects and captions. Very cool--very impressed.
