Query comes into custom httpd, Google Web Server ("gwis")
Sent in parallel to several places:
* Index server, "every page with the word 'apple' in it -- a cluster
that manages "shards" or "partitions" (everything starting with the
letter "a") and then load-balancing replications for each. Have to
calculate intersections for multiple-term queries
* Doc server, copies of webpages -- whence page-snippets are served
in results. Sharded and replicated for scaleability and redundancy
* Misc servers: QuickLinks, spell-checkers, Ad server (first two are
small servers, ad server is humongous)

Search Returns!
Search Returns!
08/03/2004 09:03 AMSo our behind-the-curtains team here at the Gawker Empire has been,
well, besides basically keeping we lazy editors afloat, working hard
to make sure that our websites do cool things like actually
work. Brice (who I, of all editors, forgot on Sysadmin
Appreciation, but will remember now) spent a long time finally
building a search tool that would get the job done for Gizmodo (MT's
search, god love it, just wasn't quite up to the task of handling of
dozens to tens of dozens of requests at once), and we've been testing
it out for the last week or so, and so far it's working pretty
great.
I just thought I'd point it out to you (it's up there in the right
hand corner), say thanks again to Brice and everybody who works so
hard to make our jobs easier, and explain a little about the new
search's extended features after the jump.

Well most of today was spent on basic webmastering, content writing
and CSS stuff (and I've munged a lot of CSS -- I know it won't
validate any longer). But I just caught my breath and put in a
requested feature: RSS Filtering.
Here's What a Filter Does
If you've used Roogle at all then you're starting to see that your
own posts show up a lot. That's bad (well sometimes) so I
implemented a new Advanced tab which has the advanced search form with the Filter option.
Let's just say that you don't like my blog. Then you'd enter
http://radio.weblogs.c
om/0103807/rss.xml in the filter field and do the
search. And this is what you'd get:
Other
Can there be more than one filter? Not right now.
Does it remember my filter? Not yet.
Can I filter from the search results? Good idea (I just
thought of it). I'll get on that.
Who thought up this in the 1st place? Well the filter concept
credit goes to, well I can't remember but thank you for the
idea. Leave me a note here and I'll give you the credit and a
cross link.

Startup Execs Harder To Come By?
Startup Execs Harder To Come By?
09/14/2004 06:22 PMWhile VCs are back to funding startups, without a really hot IPO
market, it seems that many startups are
having difficulty attracting
top-notch executives. At least that's what the article suggests.
Apparently, execs don't necessarily want to jump on the next hot
thing, without some form of stability (read: more cash) or a higher
likelihood of an IPO (read: potential for a lot more cash). Of
course, it sounds like some of the requirements companies are putting
out are a bit stringent. I agree that experienced execs are very
useful to startups, but too often it seems that startups look for the
perfect exec who has done exactly the same thing in the past. Those
candidates aren't always the best. They may have gotten lucky in a
previous startup and now feel they know everything, while a smarter,
hungrier less "experienced" exec may be able to do more to drive a
startup forward. Either way, if the IPO market takes off again, it's
likely these missing startup execs will return -- and that might not
be a good thing. A startup exec who jumps ship just because of the
opportunity for a big cash payout isn't always going to be the best
person to help build a sustainable company. You want someone who
believes in the long-term potential of the company and its vision --
not the short-term potential of an IPO.

06/14/2004 10:53 PMPubMed -- Medical Research in the Palm of Your
Hands
"I just saw PubMed on
Tap at freewarepalm.com.
This is a wireless enabled Palm application (I think over any internet
connection) that lets you search Pub Med, the free subset
of Med-Line. Med-line is the repository of all current and recent
medical research, with abstracts often available and full-text
sometimes. While this is an amazing (and required) resource for
medical professionals, savvy lay people will also find a wealth of
information here." [Daily
Palm]
Very interesting! I'll have to download this to see how well it
works, but it really highlights how few applications there are for
searching government and library databases. I know Innovative has AirPAC (I sure
wish SWAN had it!), but how
many other OPAC vendors provide this type of interface?

years, will be made freely available on the Internet. The Wellcome
Trust, in partnership with the Joint Information Systems Committee
(JISC), and the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) are joining
forces to digitize the complete backfiles of a number of important and
historically significant medical journals. The digitized content will
be made freely available on the Internet – via PubMed Central (

) and augment the content already available there.
With
funding of £1.25 million [£750,000 from the Trust, £500,000 from
the JISC] the project plans to digitize around 1.7 million pages of
text. The NLM, a part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, will manage the project, host
the archive, and ensure that the digital files are preserved in
perpetuity. The list of journals to be digitized will include the
Annals of Surgery, Biochemical Journal, Journal of Physiology and
Medical History. Digitization will commence in Summer 2004 and the
first titles will be online early in 2005. Once the backfiles are
digitized, a significant new body of medical literature will be freely
available on the Internet.
