Here's a story about a Microsoft employee sending an e-mail to Bill Gates, and getting a real reply back, where Bill says he is indeed happy. And everyone celebrates after receiving the e-mail from Bill, and the e-mail got framed on the wall, and the Microsoft employee ended up on cloud nine.
What is interesting is one of the comments below: "Have I mistakenly stumbled across the fabled 'lost chapter from Microserfs'?"

MSNBC reports that electrical devices in the town of Canneto di Caronia, Sicily have been spontaneously combusting. It's gotten so bad that the entire town had to be evacuated. The power company removed the town from the grid and put it on a generator, until the generator also caught fire.

"Every time some new scientist comes to town, they arrive thinking the whole thing has been invented or that they're going to solve the mystery in two minutes. They've all been wrong." [...] "Someone wrote to us saying the solution was to sacrifice a black goat and collect its blood. At some point, that's going to start looking like a good idea."

Weird.

blue_front_closed_400.jpg imageOlympus has a new consumer camera out today with a style many will probably hate, but I think is rather attractive, in a mecha-node robot spoor sort of way. It's called the MJU MINI Digital, and it's a 4-megapixel camera with a 1.8-inch screen, a metal body, unlimited movie recording. Plus it comes in six new colors, all of which will be found in the most stylish of pockets when it is released later this year in the UK for £250.

Multiple snaps in an elliptical orbit to Olympus for taking a chance on this model. I expect this one will be very popular.

Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors 04/14/2005 10:03 AM

mrobe_2col.jpgOlympus is offering two new colors of their m:robe MR-100 MP3 player—sort of. The front of the device is still the Knight-Rider-like red-on-black (of which, I must say, I am a fan). The back of the current models is white, but the new models will be available with backs in light pink and light blue. It's like those videos I used to stare at when I was a kid, where the cover girl was a studious bookworm by day but a crime-fighting whore at night. I may be getting some of the plot-points confused.

No idea if we'll get these models in America. I guess it depends on how well the MR-100 is selling, which is hard to augur considering Olympus misguidedly put all their marketting muscle into the MR-500.

It's nice looking, though, especially in a category otherwise filled with knobby plastic chassis (with horrible gas mileage).

Not Klingon, exactly; perhaps the Protoss.

Mark also informs me that the European name of this camera is the µ[mju:], which best I can work out is pronounced, "microbracketmuujuuucolonbracket." Fancy!

Olympus Camedia C-310Zoom/D-540 Reviewed 07/14/2004 12:06 PM

Although they'll be obsolete in a couple years as we get the same level of quality imagers on our phones, it's still nice to be in a time when $180 can bring home a perfectly decent 3.2-megapixel camera from someone like Olympus. The D-540/C-310Zoom (why they split the numbering convention cross-continents I'll never know) is definitely on the low-end for Olympus, but besides the standard concessions like an all-plastic body, the D-540 is a perfectly able camera, providing nice quality images, quick and easy use, and a good value -- at least according to Photography Blog. Maybe they just made it all up!

It lacks on a lot of tweaker features, like mirrored finished, nasal spray, and ... wait, like ISO speed or aperture settings, but as a down-and-dirty point-and-shoot, the C-310 gets the job done, providing more than adequate image quality without breaking the bank -- the C-310Zoom (which is branded the D-575 in the States) can be picked up for around $250.
