Articles for Educators
http://www.articlesforeduc ators.com/

Articles For Educators is a free resource offered by Virtu Software. On this website, teachers will find lesson plans, field trip ideas, tips and tricks for the classroom written by educators. Visitors can browse the directory of articles by subject or search for a specific topic. This section highlights Mathematics lesson plans written by math teachers and is organized into the following main sections: Competition, Fun with Numbers, and Miscellaneous. Membership, which is free, provides educators access to post articles, comment on other articles, or discuss subjects in the community forum. The website does include a few advertisements, but they do not overwhelm the website and its creator, a software developer who is also active in Christian ministry, also includes several Christian education links. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2005. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Teaching educators about free software

Teaching educators about free software 12/17/2003 10:45 AM
I was shocked when the middle school principal told me he could not accept free software for his journalism program; that all he was allowed to use was fresh-from-the-box commercial software. "It's school district policy," he said. "We can't even bring software from home now. It's because of the licensing. There are big fines for using unlicensed software. We can't risk it." This was an educated man, a fine teacher and administrator, but he knew nothing about the licensing terms under which Linux, OpenOffice, and many other fine programs are distributed. Neither, apparently, did his superiors in the school district administration. We need to teach them.

Illinois Educators Conference Blog

Illinois Educators Conference Blog 03/14/2005 06:22 PM

What in the World is IceCasting?

“IceCasting is an experiment in MobCasting, an idea that Andy Carvin has been exploring lately. The Illinois Technology Conference for Educators (IL-TCE) will be held in St. Charles from March 1 through March 4 and I thought this might be an interesting way to extend the learning.

Everyone loves attending conferences. There's something about being surrounded by your colleagues and being exposed to new ideas at every turn that really just gets people jazzed up about technology, teaching, and education in general. This blog is a way to capture that feeling and share it with other people. It's a place to capture those ideas that you just can't wait to take back to your school, or make you think differently about the way you're doing things now.

If you experienced something at ICE and want to share it with people, there's two ways that you can do so. Send an email to teach42.icecasting@blogge r.com, and the entire text of the email will be instantly posted here. You can also attach photos to the emails if you'd like to! If you'd like to leave an audio comment, simply call 1-661-716-BLOG (2564), use 555-555-5555 for the login and then enter 2005 as your pincode. Leave a message and your audio comment will be posted directly to the blog!

So in between sessions, if you feel inspired, pick up your cell phone and give the number a call. Share what you've seen or heard that inspired you with everyone else. Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone else attending the conference.

If you happen to use Flickr, then tag your ICE photos with ICE2005. I'll be adding a feed to the sidebar that will grab all of our communal photos that way.” [IceCasting]

Steve Dembo seems to be doing all of the heavy lifting at this point (text and audio), but it’s certainly a great idea. Keep up the great work, Steve!

To my great regret, I won’t be able to attend the Computers in Libraries conference this year, so I’m going to have to attend via the blogs. Thank heavens for non-complex, navel-gazing conference bloggers!

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles 09/20/2004 07:07 PM
News gurus The Inquirer note that online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, has now over a million pages of content.

Formed just under 3 years ago, the site has exploded in content and usefulness. With just 200,000 pages as of January this year, over the last 9 months they've seen a five fold increase and a few server pains to boot. It's unique method of content creation has also been key to it's success. Users submit data and build up subjects, often with startling levels of detail. Data can then be edited / updated by other users as time goes on, keeping content fresh and up to date.

Although the site has enjoyed much success in the technology community due to it's free / GPL friendly nature, traditional educational establishments have been urged not to use the site, with some groups suggesting that it is "un-authoritative". Indeed, one techie went on to test exactly how good Wikipedia users were at weeding out false information: the results were poor, with none of the changes being noticed.

Sadly, although Wikipedia list a reference for The Inquirer, the site doesn't feature yours truly - Neowin. A page placed on the site today was hours later marked for deletion; better check it soon, as it might not be there tomorrow.

The Wikimedia Foundation announced today the creation of the one millionth article in Wikipedia, its project to create a free, open-content, online encyclopedia (Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org)). Started in January 2001, Wikipedia is currently both the world's largest encyclopedia and its fastest-growing, with articles under active development in over 100 languages. Nearly 2,500 new articles are added to Wikipedia each day, along with ten times that number of updates to existing articles.

Lawyer In Murder Case Trying To Prove
GPS Is Junk Science
02/11/2004 03:58 AM
We've written before about court cases that involve some element of technology, where a lawyer convinces a judge or a jury of something by simply using a lot of techno-babble that doesn't make sense, in an effort to prove a point that simply isn't true. It sounds like that's what a lawyer is about to do in the well hyped Laci Peterson murder trial here in California. Scott Peterson's lawyer is going to try to have the court exclude GPS evidence on Peterson's whereabouts by claiming GPS technology is unreliable and inaccurate and has "not been generally accepted by the scientific community." Considering the number of applications that use GPS technology with pinpoint accuracy every day, they're going to have a tough time convincing many people on this one.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Further Political Pontification 09/07/2004 02:41 PM

Trying to be all cool like we are* by commenting on the upcoming elections, SlashDot has added a special political section to carry stories about the campaigns.

With the US Presidential Election coming up, we've had a lot of story submissions that we would like to post, but they don't fit very well on the Slashdot main page. To address this, we'll be running special political coverage between now and the election in our new Politics subsection of Slashdot. [...]

We'll do our best to be fair with story selection. We think we can do a good job since the Slashdot editors represent a diverse spectrum of political ideologies.

While the editors may be able to maintain an unbiased discourse, I'm sure no one expects the same of the comments. Still, it's great to see all of the ways in which online communities are trying to get people informed and involved. The way things are going, I predict a record voter turnout this year**.

* Actually, SlashDot may have beaten us by about 8 minutes.

** Actually, I don't have anything to back that up, and I'm totally spitballing it.

PS: Last election post today, I (campaign) promise

Political clarity...

Political clarity... 10/31/2003 07:16 AM

For many recent Labour voters the last couple of years have been a bit of a troubling time - with some of the actions of the government (particularly with regard to the War in Iraq) seeming to be violently and almost universally at odds with the views of the electorate. As a result, I think it's far to say that their popularity has waned. But while people have become vaguely disillusioned with Labour, the other political parties haven't really seemed to be particularly inspiring any kind of reaction at all. In a way it's a bit of a surprise - whether you like the policies or not, it's difficult to deny that the Conservative policy raft has been more interesting than it has been for a long time. But that doesn't seem to have made much of a difference either way. On the whole - with the exception of occasional terrifying statements by Oliver Letwin, the only things they do that get any press or interest from the public have been their bi-weekly attempts to commit televised hari-kiri.

There's a whole range of reasons why they might not have made sufficient political hay recently. Obviously there's the increase in general political disillusionment. Certainly the current government hasn't done an awful lot to stem that particular tide. Also, no one realistically thinks that the Conservative party can quite hold themselves together long enough to put any of their shiny new (if occasionally barking) policies into practice? Their regular apocalyptic tailspins have made them the "Kenny" of Westminter's "South Park".

Another position - and one I tend to subscribe to - is that because they've simply tried to be perceived as vaguely socially tolerant (and had a "nice" non-threatening leader), minority groups, trade unions and the like have stopped thinking of them as an actual danger any more. And while that group has had their anxieties eased a bit that doesn't mean that they (or other people in the centre-ground) are yet convinced that they're trustworthy, representative of public opinion or - well - totally in touch with reality... And while they're waiting for evidence, they're quite comfortable to background them...

Well as far as I'm concerned, the discomfort remains and the anxiety is back. That's not to say that I think Michael Howard has much of a chance of being Prime Minister. And it's not to say that I think the party will be any more united under his leadership. But - if they put him in charge of their party - they will have made certain parts of this argument crystal clear for me again. Instead of being able to view the Conservative party as representing an alternative - perhaps more market / efficiency driven - approach to running the country, appointing Michael Howard is no more or less than running up the Conservative Skull and Crossbones again and setting sail for the easy targets of cheap political swag.

Tom Watson has put up a post that reminds us of the facts about Michael Howard. There's terrifying stuff in there. I'm going to highlight a few of the ones that scare me most personally, but please - read the full list...

"As Home Secretary, he believed that the answer to crime was simply to lock more people up: "an increase in the number of criminals in prison leads to a large fall in crime" (POLITICS, MORALITY AND THE NATION STATE lecture, ST. MICHAEL CHURCH, CORNHILL, CITY OF LONDON, 10 January 2003)"

"Howard criticised Jack Straw's decision to detain General Pinochet and actively campaigned for his release: "We think this has gone on far too long. We think he should be sent back to Chile." (BBC Interview, 26 November 1998)"

"Howard opposed the introduction of the Human Rights Act."

"Howard was judged to have flouted the European Convention on Human Rights following unlawfully delaying the release of five long-serving IRA prisoners - the SEVENTH time he had been found to be acting illegally in just two years as Home Secretary. (September 1995)"

"Howard voted against equal rights for homosexuals by opposing lowering the homosexual age of consent to 16"

And if you still needed evidence that this man must not be allowed to become Prime Minister at any cost, then how about these two draconian, vile-worded and dangerously regressive/oppressive policies:

"Howard was the Minister in Charge of bringing in the Poll Tax in 1988. Even after Thatcher had gone, and after the poll tax riots, he insisted he still believed in the policy (July 1991)"

"Howard was the Minister who brought in Clause 28 of the Local Government Act banning the "promotion" of homosexuality (March 1988)"

It's an interesting week in British politics (and not just because of Hutton). On Tuesday evening, British MP (and noted blogger) Tom Watson raised the subject of RFID tags in a House of Commons debate (text here) - as a result of being alerted to the t hreat to civil liberties by fellow bloggers. Indeed, he even talked about his website in the chamber. Can blogs continue to affect British democracy? Qu ite possibly...

Joshua Green wrote an interesting and insightful piece regarding the current state of political advertisements. Here is an example of an ad by a media consultant he refers to, based in Pittsburgh. Another spin here. I've often wondered why they're so predictable. The Atlantic gives us a glimpse into poly. ad history and, quite possibly, its future.
