Google Needs People

Google Needs People 10/11/2002 05:52 PM

Peter Morville talks about the recent stir Google created when it launched a beta version of Google News, a service Google claims was generated without human editors. Peter, coauthor of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition, thinks Google should stop denying that it needs humans.

People google "I am lonely" form a
community on top result page
06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Randomly, the top Google result for "I am lonely" is a message board on a site for video codecs. People who typed "I am lonely" into Google have taken over the board and formed an ad-hoc community. Seven Sixty-seven pages of posts!
I too was a victum of google and got to this thread. I am not really lonely just wish I had better friends. one of my good friends told my x-girlfriend(we were still friends after we broke up) a lie that I cheated on her while we were together. the girl was pissed because I told my best friend (who she was dateing) about how she was bragging that they weren't dateing anymore. I turned out that my best friend thought they were still dateing and they argue. girl gets pissed. screws up my friendship with my x (who I had known and cared about for about 2 1/2 years) and now she never looks at me the same. Worst of all my best friend backed up her story (this is a week after I talked to my best friend abut his girl). so my best friend (who I was trying to help in the first place) betrayed me. Limp bizkit once said " it's all about the he said she said bullll sh1t." and now I beleive him.

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...

People Want To Yak In The Sky

People Want To Yak In The Sky 09/14/2004 02:55 PM
There have been plenty of stories in the last few months about various tests and plans to let passengers on airplanes start using mobile phones while flying. The basic solution involves a modified cell tower attached to the plane itself, to route all the calls through that tower, rather than deal with the problem of having phones hit many, many towers within range on the ground beneath them. However, many people seem to react with horror to the idea that the person sitting next to them could be talking away on their phone the whole flight, ignoring, of course, that plenty of people talk to their neighbors on flights already. Of course, with mobile phones there are additional problems such as the "yelling" that comes with mobile phone conversations (especially in a noisy environment) and the "annoyance" of only hearing one side of the conversation (which studies have shown is more annoying, probably because the side you hear is either on or off, unlike a standard conversation which may be continuous). However, it's still likely to move forward, as a new study shows that many business travelers would make airline decisions based on whether or not they could use their mobile phones on board. To make the study more useful, though, they should ask people if they would choose to fly on certain airlines if they included a "no mobile phone yakking" section as well.

People Still Like CDs

People Still Like CDs 09/17/2004 04:12 AM
While the recording industry continues to insist that music downloading is destroying their business, there's even more evidence that this simply isn't true. From ITFacts.biz, we learn that 92% of people surveyed still prefer their music on a CD. In fact, most say that when they download it's usually to get songs they can't get on CD or to sample music before buying the CD. Other reasons given are if they want a song immediately or if they really only want one or two songs from an album and don't want to shell out for the entire album. Notice that all four of these reasons show that music downloading is not a substitute for CDs. Now, obviously, not everyone here may be telling the truth. Also, the percentage of people who are just fine with downloads is likely to grow over time. However, if the recording industry were smart about this they'd realize that they should be focusing on ways to use downloads to promote more CD sales -- and perhaps adding more value to the CDs itself (off the top of my head, this could include: DVD content, better liner notes, access to the band's fan club, free tickets to a show, etc.).

Odom recommended turning the whole mess over to the UN. Mention of Odom or the segment is kind of hard to pry out of ABC . Where Did All The People Go?

Where Did All The People Go? 08/31/2004 04:28 AM
There's nothing wrong with automation. It often does help improve tedious tasks while opening up new more interesting jobs. However, what keeps getting passed off as automation, isn't automation at all, but shifting labor to customers. You'll notice the people have been disappearing. It's happening at grocer y store checkout counters, movie theater ticket purchases and airline check-ins. Now, you can add hote l check-ins to the list. The hotels implementing this say it's to give guests better service -- but I'm not sure that's true. Maybe I've just been lucky (or I have the good fortune to always arrive at odd hours), but I've never had much of a problem checking in to hotels. I honestly can't remember ever having to wait in line at a hotel to check in, but to read this article, you'd think it was a big problem -- that's now solved by the fact that you can "check in" via the web, up to a week before. You get a page to print out and when you get to the hotel you hand over the paper, and they hand you an envelope. It seems like this must save all of about a minute. It must be all those impatient broadband users (note how the check in occurs over the web?). Honestly, I wouldn't have any problem with this, if they simply said outright that this is a way that they can save some money or get rid of tedious/repetitive jobs by making the customer do the work instead. Hell, if we got a discount for doing some work the hotel staff used to have to do themselves, even better. However, this isn't automation, and it's really not designed to make the customer experience better. It's just shifting the labor to the customer.

People with futures

People with futures 04/14/2004 03:42 AM

THINK!Another point of view hit me hard listening to Bush bumble last night. Every day at least three or four young Americans are killed in Iraq, and an order of magnitude more Iraqis. What an incredible amount of misery. These people had futures. Maybe one of them would have gone on to be a senator or a doctor or a poet, dancer, thinker or peace-maker. Maybe they would just be people who would like to know that Barry Bonds hit 661. They were people with futures, but now that they're dead, no more.

For the families, where exactly do they put their grief? Why should they care about Iraq? For the Iraqis, why are the Americans there? He says he feels their pain, but I don't believe that. I think if he did, he'd resign immediately and let someone else, with no personal stake in this, manage the war. Having resigned, and feeling responsible for all that death and destruction, he would have no choice but to go to Iraq and fight and give up his own life to get us out. It would be understandable if he didn't want to send his children to fight with him, and it would also be understandable if other American parents felt the same. If one more life was spared it would be the right thing to do.

Also I have no doubt that at least one of the Americans who have died would be a better leader for this country. This is the best we can do? What an embarassment for such a great country to be so utterly without direction, wasting a potential prosperity, for nothing.

More People Going Wireless

More People Going Wireless 04/13/2004 02:10 PM
The latest study from the folks at the Pew project (who put out reports at an amazing pace) shows that approximately one in six US users have logged onto the internet via WiFi. Actually, the report says via WiFi "or another wireless technology" which seems fairly broad. Does that include accessing the internet via a mobile phone? Either way, there's also a bit of a generation gap as one in three US users under the age of 27 have used wireless technologies to access the internet. Of course, part of me also wonders how many people have used wireless connections without knowing it. In other words, if you sat at my desk and used my computer, (unless you checked carefully) you might not have any idea that it's connected wirelessly to the router.

Censorship To The People! 06/10/2004 12:50 PM
Just as Vietnam has been forcing internet cafes to register their users and report the uploa ding or downloading of "bad information", China has apparently realized that they can't censor the internet effectively on their own. So, they've now created a nice little site where anyone can be a good citizen and report on their neighbors for being bad information purveyors online. It's unclear if there's any sort of "reward" for being so forthcoming, but how long will it be until people start reporting the government's own websites and other such information as being questionable?

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

firewheel.jpg imageIt's a shame I hadn't seen this Firewheel rubber band gun before now—entirely my fault, too, since apparently DansData reviewed it almost a week ago, yet I totally missed it. It's simple, cheap, and awesome, which is right up my alley. It's just a click-wheel rubber band gun, but the nautilus shell design allows you to pop off one of the ten loaded rubber bands at a time, hold it down for a full-auto burst, or just rock semi somewhere in between. It's an Australian design, but they've got an outlet here in the US, so there might just be a chance I can make some mothers unhappy with a few arms shipments to young boys. (Thanks, Matt!)

Javascript from Python

Javascript from Python 12/29/2003 06:51 PM

In a way I'm disappointed to see python-sp idermonkey released. It's a Python wrapper around the Mozilla project's SpiderMonkey Javascript engine which allows Python scripts to execute Javascript code in a rock-solid, battle-tested embedded interpreter.

Why the disappointment? Because just 5 days ago I decided that a Python wrapper for SpiderMonkey would be the ideal project for me to finally attempt to do something productive with C. John J. Lee evidently beat me to it. I can't complain though, as I was estimating a good six months to figure out how to get it all working.

Pettiness aside, this looks like a really valuable project. In addition to being critical for such things as web based unit testing (John's DOMForm does exactly that) it may also provide a useful "sandbox" protected interpreted scripting language for Python projects. Python's own rexec module is meant to provide a safe sandbox for executing potentially hostile code but has been disabled due to potential vulnerabilities. The SeaMonkey Javascript interpreter is tried and tested in this capacity, at least in its incarnation within the Mozilla family of web browsers.

HOWTO view source and license from Flash

04/08/2005 12:54 AM
Xeni Jardin: Mike Chambers of Macromedia says:
Lawrence Lessig spoke at the FlashForward conference last night in San Francisco. In his talk, title The Cost of Copy Right, he stressed to the Flash designers and developers the necessity of a culture of sharing. While the Flash community has actually been a very open community, sharing content and source, the Flash Player does not provide an easy or standard way for Flash content developers to allow viewers to download their source code (Flash files are separate from their source).

So, I have put together a simple ActionScript library for Flash that allows Flash content creators to easily allow anyone to download the source to their content by right clicking on that content. I have also added a context menu item that allows a distribution license to be specified. Finally, in a nod to Mr Lessig, I have released it all under a Creative Commons license. More info here and a screen shot here.

This web tool is designed to help teachers and students create RSS feeds for aggregating news stories from 4500 sites in Google News, that are related to curriculum topics and issues. The resulting feed addresses and utilizes a feed builder constructed by Justin Pfister and can be placed in your news aggregator such as Bloglines or your own RSS news aggregator software. Many thanks to Justin for his exceedingly useful tool. Also, this web tool was inspired by the work of Will Richardson, author of RSS: A Quick Start Guide for Educators. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide. This will also be added to thr resource listing in my Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators presentation blog. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
