"growing up to become a Pope is a lot of
fun"

Poetry by James Tate. Here are also: some thoughts by John Ashbery, an audio file of Tate reading a poem [real], an interview and finally, a dissenting view of James Tate by Dan Schneider (not the guy who was on Head of the Class). But all that is merely an excuse to link to today's most appropriate poem, James Tate's How the Pope is Chosen. Here's a brief excerpt:

After a poodle dies
all the cardinals flock to the nearest 7-Eleven.
They drink Slurpies until one of them throws up
and then he's the new Pope.

Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And
Growing...
08/17/2004 05:02 PM
A couple weeks ago we had the story about the not really free, not really broadband, free broadband scam from a company named Juice Boost. Broadband Reports has an update today about how the scam/joke/pyrami d scheme/something is taking on an incredible life of its own. The scam, of course, involves some sort of non-existent accelerator software and claims that even the most non-tech-savvy individual should realize are completely made up (free broadband connections over telephone lines and a regular modem that never go down and they'll pay you if you receive a spam message or if the connection drops among other, equally ridiculous claims). Looking for any kind of details on the company turn up nothing but more affiliates (some of whom have even sent out press releases or promises of bars of silver if you sign up). The problem, of course, is that they're promising affiliates lots of cash for signing up more people (limited to the first... oh, 80 million) so the affiliate spammers are coming out of the woodwork taking the ridiculous promises of Juice and "boosting" them even higher. Hopefully, this is all just a demonstration of how ridiculous most affiliate programs are, but that seems unlikely.

Growing a car

Growing a car 12/05/2003 07:50 PM
Interesting piece in VentureBlog about job loss in the US. Since 1995, two million Americans have lost jobs in the manufacturing industry. Those jobs didn't go overseas, though. China lost 16 million manufacturing jobs in the same period.
Economically, trade is no different than other technologies. Economist David Friedman of Santa Clara University puts it most succinctly: there are two ways to make a car -- you can either make it in Detroit or grow it in Iowa. You already know how to make it in Detroit. You get a bunch of iron ore, smelt it into steel, and have an assembly line of robots and workers shape it into a finished vehicle. To grow it in Iowa, you plant car seeds in the ground (also known as "wheat"), wait until they sprout, and harvest them. Take the harvest and put it into a big boat marked "to Japan" and let it sail off. A few months later a brand new car comes back.

How Microsoft Can Keep Growing

How Microsoft Can Keep Growing 07/22/2004 09:40 AM
Even after its huge dividend payout, Gates & Co. still have plenty in the till to fund expansion, especially through acquisitions. Microsoft's announcement on July 20 that it will distribute a large chunk of its cash hoard to shareholders makes it look like the software giant has finally accepted that it's a mature company. After all, it will spend an astonishing $75 billion over the next four years on dividends and stock buybacks -- instead of investing that money in new growth opportunities. Investors will be able to count on Microsoft (MSFT ) as a steady profit earner and source of dividend income -- much like a regulated monopoly.

Hot bitches on TV

« If only he could operate the remote control.... »

Take a teething puppy, keep his activity minimal [meaning no playing with friends in the puppy park] and reduce his daily ration of food and I can guarantee that even the most angelic puppy will turn into a petulant monster. We tried to take Otava to a nearby island on Sunday, where most of the area is a dog park, but not long after we got off the bus he started limping again, only on the other front leg. His limp became rather severe and once we got home I gave him some aspirin to help ease the discomfort a bit while I started hunting around the net for some information on what might be the problem.

I am unwilling to believe that it could be a joint abnormality and he has had no trauma or undue stress to his legs. I found something known as "panosteitis". I've known and had my own giant breed puppies for two decades and have never heard about this affliction. But, essentially, it's a result of him growing too fast. Large breed dog owners don't feed vitamin supplements and switch to adult food around four months of age to avoid the dangers of this happening. Somehow, in spite of doing everything right, he is still growing like a weed.

Panosteitis (commonly called "growing pains," "wandering lameness," or simply "pano") is associated with large breed dogs and usually occurs in dogs 5 to 12 months of age, although it has been found in dogs as old as 5 years. It most commonly affects males by a ratio of 4:1. Females are most often affected around their first heat. It is possible that the condition is partially genetic since so many German Shepherd Dogs are prone to it. However, many other factors have been associated with pano: diet, viral diseases, autoimmune problems, hyperestrogen, and vascular problems. In other words, no one knows what causes the disease. It is characterised by excessive bone production on the long bones and is an inflammation of the membrane covering the bone. Dogs will generally grow out of the problem, but it is a painful condition.

Symptoms: Favoring of legs, limping, being subdued. Pano is also called "shifting leg lameness" as it can show up in any leg and may come and go without warning. If the limping goes from leg to leg (for example, one day the dog limps on the right rear leg, and the next day, it limps on the left front), it is very likely the dog has pano.

Diagnosis: If the dog is x-rayed during a bout of pano, lesions on the area above the growth plates will be visible.

Treatment: Enforced rest is usually prescribed. Painkillers are controversial since the pup will play more without pain, and may exacerbate the condition. Some vets recommend a reduced-protein (usually an adult formula) diet.

The pathology of the disease matches the description of his symptoms almost perfectly. I've changed his food to a Nutro's low protein adult formula and started giving him 500mg of vitamin C. There's a lot of con flicting advice on the net, but the food, limited use of aspirin for the pain and reduced exercise make a lot of sense. The vitamin C hasn't been confirmed as helping, but the vitamin has a lot to do with calcium metabolism in the body so it won't do any harm at least. We'll keep our fingers crossed that it is just growing pains and that he'll grow out of it soon so we can enjoy the summertime.

On the lighter side, our new offices are very nice and my southern exposure window is terribly luxurious after years of dark cubes, although the drawback is that it is rather soporific in the late afternoon. For some reason there aren't any rubbish bins to be found anywhere in the building which is both mysterious and inconvenient.

It's Dr. Fun's Peeps Week again. I miss marshmallow peeps. :)

The photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Earth From the Air series will be in Helsinki from the 17th of June through the 18th of September according to today's HS. I've seen the exhibit in London and will be happy to see it again as the enlarged photos are quite amazing. This summer, the London exhibit will be getting textured photos so that the blind may enjoy them as well.

Pope

Pope 04/02/2005 05:56 PM
I’m not Catholic, and I disagreed with many of the Pope’s pronouncements—but for all he did to free Poland and Eastern Europe from communism, I thank him with all my heart.

The end of communism in Europe is still the central historical event of my lifetime, and it’s the thing that reminds me that people can be both good and courageous. Not just popes—dock workers too. Everybody. Even, from time to time, leaders of countries.

If, some day, historians call him Pope John Paul the Great, I’ll be fine with that.

I remember when this Pope was elected, and I remember when his predecessor was elected. For those of you too young to remember, consider this a head’s-up—the process and ritual here is fascinating, worth paying attention to, whether you’re Catholic or not. It’s history. (And, with luck, it’s history we won’t see again for many decades.)

How Fast is This Thing Growing? 05/01/2004 01:00 PM
A lot of people would like to know exactly how fast this blogging/subscribing thang is actually growing. Lots of people have seen the chart the Hummer Winblad people are keeping of the “Feeds Watched” number over at Technorati; about two and a quarter million on this first of May 2004. But the number of people reading, as opposed to publishing, is at least as interesting. I decided that Bloglines.com (which, by the way, anyone who watches this space ought to be keeping their eyes on) could be used as a surrogate for the general growth of the whole area, and drew a graph...
