07/29/2004 03:36 PMScott, a Peace Corps volunteer, got web-volunteers to help him build a
fantastic web-resource for his project in Guyana. Hot on the heels of
his success there, he's putting together a much more ambitious project
to connect up the whole Peace Corps. When I worked in Costa Rica 12
years ago with
Youth Challenge
International, I came back with the same intention, but I was
ahead of my time -- today, this is totally do-able.
I want to build site that will link up average joe web and graphic
designer, database guy and anyone else that can help with Peace Corps
volunteers around the world. We do some partnering in Peace Corps but
we don't tap the huge potential that exists with folks at home. We
need to do this. It will help get more done in the tiny timeframe that
we are here in country.

Regal Beagle Fell and Broke His Crown?
Regal Beagle Fell and Broke His Crown?
12/25/2003 10:19 AMIt looks like it's two down and two to go. ESA's rover called Beagle
2 was scheduled to land Christmas morning, but so far the
Beagle hasn't phoned home. There could be a
multitude of reasons why communications have not been
established. It could be just that the Beagle 2 has to recharge its
batteries on the first day or it won't last the night. At least
we know that the Ma
rs Express Orbitor seems to be OK. ESA scientists haven't given't
up hope yet on Beagle 2, but it already seems like Mars has claimed
another victim (we lost Japan's rover
earlier this month). With all of these failed Mars craft, should we
really send humans to Mars?

08/15/2002 12:42 PMState adds fragility and complexity to systems. All incoming
requests have to find the right state. If the state is kept in memory,
it is much harder to load balance across a cluster of machines,
because there is no practical way to keep an identical synchronized
image on all machines in a cluster. If the state is kept in a shared
durable store (normally a database), then all the machines have to
connect to it and it must log all changes to state, which takes time.
The way to avoid state is to provide all the information the client
needs in one fell swoop. For example, if I ask my hospital for my
medical record, I want to get my medical record as a single returned
message. I don't want to get back an object with "property getters"
and "property setters" that I call for each interesting piece of
information such as my name or Social Security number or birth
date. -- Adam Bosworth

Software patents are bad for coders like

Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers
06/22/2005 01:49 AMCory Doctorow:
Richard Stallman, creator of the Free Software movement, has written a
tremendous essay for the Guardian on the risks of software patents.
Richard undertakes a gedankenexperiment about "literary patents" and
the impact they would have had on Victor Hugo as he sat down to pen
Les Miserables.
Now consider this hypothetical literary patent:
Claim 1: a communication process that represents, in the mind of a
reader, the concept of a character who has been in jail for a long
time and subsequently changes his name...
These patents would all cover the story of one character in a novel.
They overlap, but they do not precisely duplicate each other, so they
could all be valid simultaneously - all the patent holders could have
sued Victor Hugo. Any one of them could have prohibited publication of
Les Misérables.
You might think these ideas are so simple that no patent office would
have issued them. We programmers are often amazed by the simplicity of
the ideas that real software patents cover - for instance, the
European Patent Office has issued a patent on the progress bar, and
one on accepting payment via credit cards. These would be laughable if
they were not so dangerous.
