04/18/2005 04:40 PMIndependent research firm International Data Corp. (IDC) recently
finished work on a report commissioned by Apple that focused on the
company's efforts in the scientific life sciences field. While the
report was complimentary to many of Apple's accomplishments over the
past few years it also pointed out some pitfalls the company would
have to watch in the future. This, said an Apple executive, is just
what Apple was looking for.

literature databases, such as PubMed®, PMC, Books, OMIM™, Journals,

Conserved Domain Database, 3D-Domains; the NCBI Taxonomy, Gene

Population Sets, Genomes, Sequence Tagged Sites, UniGene,
Gene-centered information (Gene), and, finally, the NCBI Web site

Making life
Making life
04/28/2004 05:27 PMThe current issue of Scientific American features a mind-blowing
article by W. Wayt Gibbs about "synthetic biology," the effort to
create designer organisms from the bottom up:
"This nascent field has three major goals: One, learn about life by
building it, rather than by tearing it apart. Two, make genetic
engineering worthy of its name--a discipline that continuously
improves by standardizing its previous creations and recombining them
to make new and more sophisticated systems. And three, stretch the
boundaries of life and of machines until the two overlap to yield
truly programmable organisms. Already TNT-detecting and
artemisinin-producing microbes seem within reach. The current
prototypes are relatively primitive, but the vision is undeniably
grand: think of it as Life, version 2.0."

Life is tough for game developers, says
study
04/29/2004 11:48 AMIt looks like it's all work and no play for game developers.
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has a white
paper titled "Quality of Life in the Game Industry: Challenges and
Best Practices." Some of the findings:
Crunch time is omnipresent, during which respondents work
65 to 80 hours
a week.
The average crunch work week exceeds 80 hours 13% of the
time.
Overtime is often uncompensated.
Spouses are likely to respond that "You work too much..." (61.5%);
"You
are always stressed out." (43.5%); "You don't make enough money."

Study Finds Ample Opportunities for Life
Science Suppliers in the Biodefense
Market
07/28/2004 02:47 AMBiodefense research is one of the fastest growing markets for
suppliers of life science products and instrumentation. Government
spending on biodefense research is likely to continue to increase at a
rate exceeding investment in other areas of biological research and
development, and is attracting both scientists and the companies who
support them. President Bushs authorization of the Project BioShield
Act last week is but one of many government initiatives to improve the
countrys defenses against bioterrorism. Since the ability to
effectively combat bioterrorism largely depends on the information
generated by biomedical research on disease-causing microorganisms and
the immune systems response to them, nearly $1.6 billion is allocated
in 2004 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This budget will
help support basic research on potential agents of bioterrorism such
as anthrax or smallpox as well as the development of vaccines,
diagnostic tests and therapies to detect and counter the effects of a
bioterrorist attack. [PRWEB Jul 28, 2004]
