Technology Induced ADD?

Technology Induced ADD? 03/28/2005 04:34 PM
For the most part, when we hear stories about psychologists naming a new problem related to technology, we make the obvious assumption that they're trying to get some attention to drum up business. This leads to publicity over things like web addiction, video game addiction, inter net addiction, text messaging addiction and many other such claims. While it's nice to at least see the latest technology-induced problem a psychologist describes is not called an addiction, it still sounds a bit overstated. A psychologist who studies attention deficit disorder (ADD) is now claiming that many people in today's high tech workplace are suffering from a related disorder he calls attention deficit trait (ADT). The concept is that you're not born with ADT, but it's induced by a workplace that forces you to multi-task all the time -- and that it's easily cured by getting out of that environment. He also claims that "multi-tasking" is impossible for humans, which some might disagree with -- but he does make some valid points on getting people to occasionally stop and actually think about things. Taking a longer term viewpoint is often very useful. Still, it's not clear that it's really reached the "epidemic" stage that this guy claims. If anything, it seems that as more companies recognize the importance of a better work/life balance, this becomes less of an issue. That means not doing stupid things like banni ng solitaire -- which acts as a mental break, or trying desperately to stop all personal activities at work. In fact, the psychologist points out that it's often the tech companies who are better able to diffuse this "ADT" stuff by understanding the importance of "play" at work. As such ideas diffuse more widely into the workplace, it seems like this problem shouldn't be such a big issue.

Snow Induced Laziness

Snow Induced Laziness 02/07/2003 10:52 PM

Twelve inches of snow has fallen here in Massachusetts. It's a light snow. Someone told me it was perfect for skiing, but I tend to find it perfect for relaxing indoors watching old favorites. But then again, I'm not a skier.

I'm pretty sure Total Choice Hosting is going to be my new webhost soon. They have a good reseller program, and a great price at twenty clams a month. They came recommended by Noel, and I've read many good things about them. For those of you with slightly more money to spare than myself, Hard Hat Hosting seems to be a really good provider run by some good people. I'd still like recommendations on hosting providers if you have them, I still have a couple days to make up my mind.

WiFi Induced Theft

WiFi Induced Theft 09/08/2004 05:26 AM
There have been plenty of random complaints about WiFi, but now there's one more "worry" to be associated with WiFi: all these hotspots may m ake it easier for your laptop to get stolen. Or, at least, that seems to be the point of this article from Silicon.com that complains that many hotspot providers aren't the sort of place you should feel comfortable whipping out your expensive laptops. They suggest (along with a tremendous amount of hedging) that these hotspot providers are encouraging people to take out laptops where it might not be safe. This seems like something of a stretch. Does common sense really leave people behind at the first whiff of an available WiFi connection? If the location isn't safe, people should recognize that on their own, and it should have nothing to do with the WiFi availability.

Today, It's DoubleClick's Turn To Take A
Zombie-Induced Rest

Today, It's DoubleClick's Turn To Take A
Zombie-Induced Rest
07/27/2004 08:03 PM
Questioning the overall ability of major sites to withstand a concerted attack yet? Following yesterday's story about Google being knocked offline, today it's DoubleClick who was the victim of a distributed denial of service attack from zombie machines. The attack knocked the company offline, impacting many of their customers, who probably aren't particularly happy. A number of major sites running DoubleClick ads ended up loading very slowly as they couldn't call home to get their ads. As the article notes, this, and the attack on Akamai last month, (much more so than yesterday's tangential denial of service attack at the hands of a search engine loving virus) are starting to demonstrate some key trouble points on the internet.

X-Files actor invents gadget to prevent
laptop-induced infertility
12/24/2004 12:09 PM
Actor Dean Haglund of the X-Files has invented the Chill Pak, a cooling system for computer laptops, which were identified in a recent study as potentially lowering sperm counts in men. Haglund's Chill Pak is a freezable mat designed for placement beneath a laptop to cool the CPU, which tends to overheat when users run today's computer programs. Not only does this cooling action allow the laptop to run faster and more smoothly, it also prevents the overheating attributed to male infertility. The Chill Pak is encased in a condensation-free material to protect the electronics from moisture. Haglund inadvertently discovered this innovation while recovering from a knee injury. Haglund recalls, "I was watching a movie on my laptop, and it kept locking up on me. The ice pack protecting my knee injury accidentally slid underneath my laptop, and the movie immediately began playing, trouble-free. I realized the cooling action of the ice pack was the key." Haglund immediately launched his Chill Pak invention through his own company Geek Chic, which is scheduled for beta-testing with Time Warner Cable employees nationwide. The Chill Pak can also be personalized with corporate logos.

David Pescovitz: C041215 8 LI love this video of Honda's new-and-improved Asimo robot running. He moves like a cute old man chasing a bus. From the press release:
"The combination of newly developed high-response hardware and the new Posture Control technology enables ASIMO to proactively bend or twist its torso to maintain its balance and prevent the problems of foot slippage and spinning in the air, which accompany movement at higher speeds. ASIMO is now capable of running at a speed of 3km/hour. In addition, walking speed has been increased from the previous 1.6 km/hour to 2.5 km/hour."
