Does Your Software Need A Personality
Test?
11/12/2003 01:35 PMThere are all different theories in designing software, but I've never
heard of trying to
give an application the famous Myers-Briggs personality
test to design its user interface. However, that's what an
anti-spam software company has done. They looked over the various
Myers-Briggs personality profiles to find the personality that most
matched "spam stopping" and chose "ESTJ" or the "Guardian Supervisor",
and then made user interface choices based on what sort of person that
was likely to portray. It's certainly a different approach, and it
will be interesting to see how effective (if at all) it is. It sounds
like some of the design choices they made (e.g., no help menu) may
sound good on paper, but will confuse users (no matter what their
personality type) who are just used to applications working in a
specific way. Users expect a certain comfort level, even in new
applications, so that the learning curve isn't too much of a hurdle
for them to deal with.

03/31/2005 11:46 PMXeni Jardin:
At
a
conference in Santa Monica today, Sony Pictures Digital
Entertainment SVP Michael Arrieta said:
"We want to set business models, pricing models, distribution models
like (Apple Computer CEO Steve) Jobs did for music, but for the film
industry," [said Arrieta], "I'm trying to create the new
'anti-Napster."
To that end, Arrieta said, his group plans to digitize Sony
Pictures' top 500 films and make them available for the first time in
various digital environments within the next year. He said the
distribution for films like "Spider-Man 2" will go beyond just
Movielink, the video-on-demand joint venture of Sony Pictures and
several other major studios, which to date has hosted a limited
library of Sony's movies.
For example, Sony plans to sell and make films available in flash
memory for mobile phones in the next year, Arrieta said. It also will
further develop its digital stores for downloading and owning films on
the PC, he said in an interview. Sony's plans--and similar moves by
other studios--are likely to avoid empowering any one technology
company--such as Apple in the music equation--and allow studios to
pocket more of the profits. The philosophy in Hollywood is "Define
your own agenda or someone else will for you."

Email Personality Checker
11/03/2003 03:36 PMI use Eudora as my email client which has the amusing (if mostly
useless) feature of noticing if I'm using any bad words, and warning
me that I might be "flaming" someone (it also notes if incoming mail
appears to be burning hot as well). Basically, if you put in a curse,
it notices it. This is a slightly different take on the ever-popular
spell-checker and grammar-checker offerings. We've already seen some
other variations on the technology, such as the
"Bullfi
ghter" application that would help you cut buzzwords out of your
documents. Now, however, a researcher in the UK is apparently working
on something of a
"personality
checker" for your email. You first indicate what sort of
personality you want to display ("why, I'm sort of morbid today, let's
make my emails dark") and then it will watch what you write and
suggest alternatives to more properly convey the proper tone.
Consider it your very own personality coach. Apparently, we feel the
need to automate even our own personality these days. Since studies
have shown that spell checkers make
good
spellers worse, does that mean this new tool will give us less
personality?

Dare Obasanjo differentiates the
WinFS data model from the structures definable in
W3C XML Schema as follows:
The WinFS schema language and W3C XML Schema do two fundamentally
different things; W3C XML Schema is a way for describing the structure
and contents of an XML document while a WinFS schema describes types
and relationships of items stored in WinFS. [Dare Obasanjo]
As I see it, there are two major classes of XSD-governed XML
documents. Both are well-supported by Microsoft and by other players.
First, in the realm of Web services, we have SOAP messages wrapped in
WSDL interfaces. Over the past two years, thanks in large part to
Microsoft efforts which I've lauded, there's been a shift from an
RPC-oriented style of SOAP messaging to the document-oriented style
that better suits the coarse-grained, asynchronous, message-driven
architectural pattern. XSD is how we define the datatypes and
structures in those messages.

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AMIt appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months
back when they released an anti-spyware tool that
just so
happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest
version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now
default to
notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be
"adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I
haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in
the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were
thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what
spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change
how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back
at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in
the first place.
Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
06/02/2004 10:10 AMWe didn't write about Yahoo's new "anti-spyware" toolbar that they
announced last week, because it seemed to receive plenty of hype, and
there were no real reviews of how it worked. There are so many
so-called anti-spyware applications out there that
don't
actually stop spyware and adware for fear of upsetting marketing
companies or out of worries that actually stopping spyware may make
some applications stop working (upsetting the user), that we figured
Yahoo's anti-spyware app (hype and all) probably wouldn't be much to
bother with. It certainly looks like that may be the case. eWeek is
now reporting that Yahoo tries to dance the careful dance of not
upsetting certain companies who
threate
n to sue people who call their application spyware. Of course,
the situation is even more complex because Claria (who you probably
know as Gator - despite their attempt to
change
their name to shake that spyware label) is also a partner of
Yahoo. So, it's really not surprising that
the default
setting for Yahoo's anti-spyware app won't actually remove services
like Gator or WhenU. Instead, Yahoo's spyware remover claims
these programs are "adware" and will only remove them if you click and
extra check box
each time you run the program. In other words,
once again, you can't trust a provider of anti-spyware software,
because they're playing both sides of the fence: partnering with
providers on the one hand, and then offering weak removal products on
the other. If Yahoo were serious about removing spyware from the
computers of users they would refuse to partner with companies that
used surreptitious tactics to be installed on computers. Instead,
they want to look good to users in the front, while letting in
spyware/adware from partners through the backdoor.

AOL Offers Spyware Stopper... Just After

bundling
spyware/adware with their instant messenger product, AOL announces
their
latest
anti-spyware application. While we've been complaining about
anti-spyware from ISPs that just points out the spyware, AOL claims
that this version will disable (though not delete) the spyware. I
wonder if it will catch the spyware that AOL installs themselves.

Homepage Usability
Homepage Usability
03/30/2005 05:47 PM

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as
a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home
page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content
through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet
your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard
statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend
most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find
some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search,
privacy policies, and logos are used.
All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic
deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The
authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of
usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real
estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts.
Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for
potential improvements.
