Bay Area Mobile Forum
Bay Area Mobile Forum
06/09/2004 12:34 PMRussell Beattie is on a tear! I say "Ice Tea" (some of us
don't drink!) And no carbs, just meat and cheese.
Bay
Area Mobility Forum. Things are, as always, insanely busy at the
moment.
So continuing the thought from Saturday, I think I've gotten some
great reception to the idea of having an "un-conference"/get together
about mobility. Since I'm up in Emeryville and not technically in
Silicon Valley, I decided to call it the Bay Area Mobility Forum. I
just registered mobilityforum.org as well.
Now, what's the best way to organize online? There's three ways I
can think of - I can:
1) Start a Yahoo Group. But I think that's aging platform. Yes,
once upon a time it was cool, but now mailing lists are so
passé.
2) Start a wiki. I could grab JSP Wiki and have it up and running
in a matter of minutes. And I think Wikis are wonderful and cool and
all that, but I may be too type-A to deal with the hassle of a zillion
people editing pages without control.
3) Start a blog. I think this is probably the best option. And I'm
not even thinking about using *my* weblog, but the new Blogger. It
supports multiple authors, comments, etc. It doesn't supprt RSS which
sorta sucks, but the rest is pretty great.
I'm partial to the blog because it's easier to diseminate timely
information, comments are great ways of getting feedback without
getting things lost in discussion groups, and by inviting multiple
authors, I can - like Mobitopia - take the load off me when I flake
out and move on to other shiny things that catch my interest.
In terms of the what the goal is of the get together, I think it's
a great idea to copy wholesale from the OWC.
Thus:
The Bay Area Mobility Forum mission is to cultivate and
accelerate Silicon Valley's mobile and telecom sectors through
leadership, technology, government relations, research, education,
mentoring, investment, recruitment, networking and promotion.
And free beer. Let's not forget the free beer. And
pizza too.
So in the coming days, I'll throw up a blog, invite people who are
interested in helping me organize this thing to become editors, we'll
figure out a good date for the inaugural meeting (we can use my
current offices at WaveMarket - where there's a conference room for
about 50 people and a couple board rooms for sessions), guage interest
among potential attendees, figure out some topics to chat about and
maybe get a few mobile-sector leaders to give a presentation, send
some emails to everyone I can think of getting them to show up with
their gadgets and other mobile toys...
Actually, most people will show up for the beer. I just want to see
the gadgets. No one gets in the door without a cool toy. (Just
kidding).
Comments welcome.

Do Area Codes Matter In An Age Of
Wireless And VoIP?
Do Area Codes Matter In An Age Of
Wireless And VoIP?
09/07/2004 03:08 AMDo area codes really matter any more? These days, I've gotten used to
plenty of people I know having mobile phone numbers from some distant
place where they used to live, rather than where they live now. With
so many plans no longer having any real marginal costs for long
distance calls, it hasn't much mattered, other than as a status
symbol. The same is starting to come true in the VoIP world, as well,
as people are even purposely ordering VoIP phone numbers from
locations that don't represent where they live. It almost seems like
the only purpose for area codes these days is for status symbol
purhcases (note, for example, the distress of many when they
discovered you couldn't get Manhattan's high-rent 212 as a mobile
number but had to settle for something hideous like 917). So is it
time to stop identifying phone numbers by location, and maybe start
identifying it by type of line? It seems some are going in that
direction. Reuters notes that the UK is about to
launch 056 as an area code for VoIP phone numbers, and
Jeff Pulver notes they're not the first -- as
Japan
has similarly assigned 050 for "non-geographic" numbers. Jeff
suggests that some experiments be run in the US for a similar sort of
non-geographic prefix. While having additional numbers available
makes sense as more numbers are in use, is there really a need for
specifically non-geographical numbers? As noted above, it's beginning
to happen naturally that numbers which used to have a geographical
meaning, increasingly have none.

07/08/2004 03:39 AMThe 13th IST Mobile & Wireless Communications Summit held in Lyon
27-30 June has proved to be a major forum to present results of
European mobile industry initiatives. IST has succeeded in drawing
attention to the launch of its « 6th framework » programme, which
defines the priorities of the Mobile Industry in terms of research and
development for the two years ahead. More specifically, it raises the
health and safety issues arising from the rapid development of new
technologies and their impact on society. On a more positive note, the
“6th framework” outlines emerging marketing opportunities in the IT
sector. Visions of the Mobile future and the technological challenges
were addressed by speakers from Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and
Philips. [PRWEB Jul 8, 2004]
