Books.
12/19/2004 03:36 PMSo the big<
/a> news
a> is about Google
and libraries. I don't feel the need to comment on this
right now, as you can find plenty of other places for that. However,
here are a few angles I haven't seen discussed elsewhere in the
library blogosphere.
- Librari
es and the Internet
"More broadly, the Internet can profoundly improve the relationship
between libraries and society. For example, there are two major
libraries in my town -- a college library, and a public library. My
library card works in both places. I used to favor the college
library, because there was open WiFi access there -- which meant,
among other things, that I could use LibraryLookup from my laptop to
find books in the stacks. Recently, though, the college shut down its
open access point. And from an IT administrator's point of view, I can
understand why. Not long after, the public library installed an open
access point. So now it's my favorite spot, and lately I notice other
mobile professionals congregating there too." [Jon Udell's
Weblog
(Click over to read Jon's story about getting locked in
the library, too!)
- "A quick calculation using the figures above suggests an average
scan rate of 3200 volumes per day (assuming 365 days/year for 6 years)
at the University of Michigan site alone." [Tito Sierra on the WEB4
LIB mailing list]
- "An even quicker calculation shows that they will need to
digitize 2.25 books _a_minute_, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year to
digitize 7 million volumes in six years." [Roy Tennant on the WEB4
LIB mailing list]

Storing Your Banned Phone May Cost You
12/22/2004 01:16 AMWith the
backlash
against cameraphones growing rapidly, many different places have
banned mobile phones -- including some courthouses. No, we don't know
what it is with
court
houses and wireless technologies today, but they're getting a lot
of attention.
Textuall
y is pointing out that a
new industry of sorts has been built up outside of
buildings that ban cameraphones. For $10, a hot dog vendor outside a
federal courthouse in Miami will store your contraband cameraphone
behind the hot dog buns in his cart. Down the street, a shopowner
charges $2, but gets annoyed that they keep ringing. Many who show up
at the court without realizing the ban was in place, and who don't
know about the local merchants' "side business," simply end up burying
them in the dirt or hiding them under garbage cans. If you're looking
to pick up some free mobile phones, apparently digging around outside
of federal courthouses may be the way to go.

Sex toys still banned in Alabama, guns
okay
Sex toys still banned in Alabama, guns
okay
07/29/2004 09:55 AM
A decision issued yesterday by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
says Alabama doesn't have to lift its silly, arcane 1998 law banning
the sale of sex toys. The Constitution
does not include a right to
sexual privacy, the panel of three judges ruled. Many Americans
would disagree, including this one. To paraphrase
Andre
w Orlowski's brilliant quip about the INDUCE Act, under this law
one could stroll down Alabama's southern streets selling semiautomatic
rifles and dildos, and be arrested for the dildos.
"In this case, the American Civil Liberties Union ('ACLU') invites us
to add a new right to the current catalogue of fundamental rights
under the Constitution: a right to sexual privacy. It further asks
us to declare Alabama's statute prohibiting the sale of 'sex toys' to
be an impermissible burden on this right. Alabama responds that the
statute exercises a time-honored use of state police power --
restricting the sale of sex. We are compelled to agree with Alabama
and must decline the ACLU's invitation. (...)
"Alabama's Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act prohibits, among other
things, the commercial distribution of 'any device designed or
marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital
organs for any thing of pecuniary value.'"
This calls for massive civil disobedience. FreeTheAlabamaVibrator.com
is still available, people -- it's time to stick it to the Man.
Here's the decision in PDF. More on the story
here, in a Seattle P-I piece. And
during
National Orgasm Week, no less. Is nothing sacred?
H
ere's a PDF summarizing the state's gun laws (Alabama's
congresscritters are against renewing the Assault Weapons Ban, which
expires on September 13 -- evidently the state's pro-gun lobby is much
more powerful than its pro-vibrator lobby). (
Thanks, Baptiste Coulmont)

Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
04/16/2005 09:26 PMAnyone using an Apple will have a special treat in store for them.
Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails has released the full-tracked
GarageBand Format of their song, "The Hands That Feeds". This is a
first as far as we know. Here is the info direct from Trent and you
can download the song from MacMegaSite.
For quite some time I've
been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker
around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or
destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave
with very limited results.
After spending some quality time
sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the
technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I
got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll
enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track
audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is
the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we
recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop
format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you
have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have
the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been
running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your
hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change
the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman.
Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew
and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while -
it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the
track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that
pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what
comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor

GarageBand
GarageBand
01/07/2004 03:10 PMI’ve been waiting 20 years for
GarageBand.
Back in the early ’80s, when I was a teenager—before there
were even Macs—I had an Apple II Plus with a cool piece of
software named
ALF II. (This
was even before the sitcom named Alf.)
(Actually, it wasn’t just software: there was a card you had to
plug into the computer.)
It was something like an early, early GarageBand—you could
create music and save songs and play them back. The music played
through some car-stereo speakers I plugged in to the ALF card.
You had to actually enter notes into a staff on-screen, using the twin
roller-paddle-things that came with the Apple II Plus. (No mice yet,
at least not for the mass market.) There was no way to plug in an
instrument and just play.
It had up to nine tracks, and it had some basic things like setting
the synthesizer settings and telling sections of a track to repeat.
It was cumbersome and the sound was totally electronic, but it worked.
I made dozens of songs. I loved it.
And I’ve been waiting 20 years for the chance to do that again.
Sure, I could have had this already, but for a bunch more money. Since
composing music was just a hobby for me, I never wanted to spend a
bunch on music software. Now I don’t have to.
This software excites me personally far beyond anything Apple has
announced since OS X. More than iPhoto, iTunes, Safari, iPods, and
everything else put together.
Of course, I haven’t actually tried it yet, but it only has to
be half as good as the demo to be a wonderful (to me, at least) piece
of software.

Which is ridiculous...$49 is a steal for that bundle of software.
After playing around with GarageBand this morning, I can report that
GB alone is worth the price. I've never had this much fun with a piece
of software before...I got my money's worth after 30...

Gruber on GarageBand
01/07/2004 03:08 PMJohn
Gruber: “What’s so cool about GarageBand is that it
exemplifies the market that Apple is going after. People who want to
use their computers to make cool things. People who want to be
producers, not just consumers.”
I’ll add one thing to that: of all the iLife apps, iTunes is the
most important but the least interesting. It’s important for
obvious reasons, because of iPods and the music store and that it runs
on Windows.
But it’s the least interesting because you don’t actually
create music with it. You create playlists, sure, but that’s not
the same level of creativity as creating the actual music (or taking
pictures or making movies and DVDs). iTunes is like shopping in a
really great art gallery, but it’s not the same as being a
painter.
