BlackBerry Thumb

BlackBerry Thumb 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

blackberry_thumb.jpg imageFor now, you can file the 'Blackberry Thumb' issue along side the folder where you would have kept your worries about cellphone radiation, had you not forgotten them since that tumor pressed too firmly into your hippocampus. Sure, dinking around on thumbboards probably isn't exactly the optimal use of your opposable digits, but it's likely no worse than the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb" that struck down a whole generation of good typists, who now are cursed with occasional involuntary run-ons of 'ABABSELECTSTART.' Until this doctor in the UK can actually point to a documented case of someone suffering from tendentious, I think I'll keep promoting the thumbboard as one of the best mobile input devices we have ABABSELECTSTART available. (Thanks, Aaron!)

Thumb Drives That Purrrrr

Thumb Drives That Purrrrr 07/06/2004 01:55 AM
It is not that surprising to see Thumb Drives made into everything from animals to jewelery these days. However, one Taiwanese firm took it to a new level of weird with the 256MB Cat Bar. While at first you might be expecting a feline version of Cheers, in actuality it is a thumb drive for cat lovers. To top it all off, it meows when you plug it in! Now if I could get one that looks like Bender the robot from Futurama… ;o)

Don't blame the technology. A refreshingly reasonable piece from a mainstream newspaper breaking down people's fear of technology as a springboard for outright condemnation of that technology when it's used for bad things.

Replacing The Mouse With Thumb Control

Replacing The Mouse With Thumb Control 04/20/2004 02:00 PM
MIT's Tech Review has a short article about a new type of mouse replacement that sounds like a fairly intelligent input device that takes out much of the carpal tunnel risk by recognizing that simple thumb movements can easily designate where you want the cursor to move. So, the device is basically a one-handed, baseless joystick with a flat top where simple thumb movement designate where to move on the screen without much exertion or muscle strain. The side of the device contains typical mouse buttons. Combined with the Twiddler one-handed keyboard, and you could have quite the ergonomic solution to computer input, while also allowing for mobility with wearable type computers. Of course, as with any such devices, if the learning curve seems to be too much, it will never catch on. That may be the case with the one-handed keyboard, but the mouse replacement might not be such a big stretch.

Microsoft Research scientists, in cooperation with University of Maryland researchers, have designed two interfaces to support easier use of PDAs and cellphones. The interfaces allow users to operate the devices using a thumb on one hand. The interfaces target screens from 2 to 5 inches, measured diagonally, with resolutions ranging from 176 x 220 to 800 x 600 pixels.

Like the Aerielink Wireless Flash Combo we linked to a few weeks ago, there's another second 802.11b wireless USB adapter for PCs that comes with 128MB of Flash memory storage built-in (we'll admit to having a soft spot these sorts of combo gadgets). The GN-WLBZ201 from Gigabyte also comes in a Flash memory-less version, though that's considerably less fun. Read...

Apparently, this is a leaked pic of the successor to the Sony Ericsson P900 (the phone I plan on getting as soon as my first bank-statement appears and I use it to authenticate myself to the dumbass phone company that thinks bank-statements are better ID than Canadian passports). Call it the P901, or the P1000, whatever: it's got a wee keyboard on the flip-down for those who prefer thumbing out their executive haiku to scratching at a recalcitrant handwriting-recognition system. It looks like it might be a photoshop job, but Rojas at Engadget says that MobileBurn, the source, is reliable, and I'll take his word for it. Link (via Engadget)

Edible User Interfaces

Edible User Interfaces 04/18/2005 10:04 AM

taste_me_screen.jpgDan Maynes-Aminzade is working towards a simple goal we can all appreciate: edible user interfaces. One such device, called the BeanCounter, uses electronically controlled valves to dispense jelly beans based on memory usage or other statistics of up to six running processes at a time.

Quite possibly even better (and at the very least, dramatically less hygienic) is the TasteScreen: a system consisting of an LCD monitor with a specialized USB device mounted on top of it. The device contains twenty plastic flavor cartridges which drip controlled quantities of flavoring into a staging area where they're mixed and dispensed.

When dispensed, the flavoring chemicals drip down to coat the monitor with a thin liquid residue. A user can sample the dispensed flavor by touching his tongue to the computer screen. Certain combinations of flavoring agents recreate a flavor appropriate to the user’s task.
Perhaps if he dedicates one such chamber to a Windex solution, he'll have a viable product on his hands. Regardless, we can only hope that one day you'll finally be able to discover for yourself what Gizmodo really tastes like.
