Frontier kernel open-source

Frontier kernel open-source 05/17/2004 01:24 PM
Dave Winer announced that the Frontier kernel—the C code, the internals of the application—will be made open-s ource. I’m glad: I think it’s a good thing for Frontier and Radio and their users.

During the latter part of my stint at UserLand I worked on the Frontier kernel. A big part of my efforts were on Carbonizing it. Timothy Paustian started the job, and handled all the really crazy low-level stuff like threading, then I did user interface stuff and fixed bugs. In some cases I was able to adapt the Aqua appearance, but going all the way with that would probably have tripled the development time. At least.

Anyway, what I love about the kernel is the way it is written in C but is nevertheless object-oriented. (Remember that it was started in the late ’80s, so C was the natural choice.)

The way it’s done is via the use of structs instead of “real” objects. These structs contain function pointers, so one object can inherit from another and have not just different data but different methods.

I found this to be surprisingly elegant, so much so that now, years later, I sometimes get the urge to write in C just so I can use this style of object-oriented programming. (But then the urge passes, and I stick to Objective-C.)

Open Source Community Building

Open Source Community Building 03/24/2005 05:27 AM
Open Source Community Building by Matthias Stürmer
http://opensource. mit.edu/papers/sturmer.pdf

Abstract
Building an active and helpful community around an open source project is a complex task for its leaders. Therefore investigations in this work are intended to define the optimum starting position of an open source project and to identify recommendable promoting actions by project leaders to enlarge community size in a healthy way. For this paper eight interviews with committed representatives of successful open source projects have led to over 12 hours of conversation about community building. Analysing the statements of these experienced community members exposed helpful activities that led to the presently prospering communities of their projects. Summarizing the conclusions of this qualitative research a table with conditions for successful open source project initialisation and a subject-level promotion matrix of community building could be created. They include suggestions on how to start a new open source project and how to improve and increase the community of an already advanced open source project.

Earlier this month we joked about how the new Avalanche CIO co-op was really open source with a $30,000 gate. It appears that the group doesn't see it as a joke. That's exactly how they describe themselves. The interview with one of the founders also raises some interesting points about how the group is going to avoid a SCO-IBM situation where some of the software that goes into the co-op is accused of having intellectual property violations. The guy from the co-op sort of brushes that off by saying they have a top intellectual property law firm who will review all submissions to make sure they're safe. Considering the number of software patents showing up these days on all sorts of minor software processes, and the fact that I'd put IBM's lawyers up against any top IP law firm any day and they certainly didn't expect SCO to go on this bizarre run, I doubt that's much real protection. If anything, this may end up opening up the companies in the co-op to more (pointless, of course) patent lawsuits by revealing their internal software. For instance, the first piece of software in the co-op was an internal application from Best Buy. Before this, no one outside of Best Buy really knew what it did, since it was all internal. Thus, there was almost no risk of being accused of patent infringment. However, by opening it up (admittedly to just a few companies right now) they risk someone who has patents on some tiny process used in their software to come back and sue them and any of the other companies in the co-op who downloads it. Maybe after a few of these types of lawsuits the companies involved in the co-op will become a bit more pro-active in fighting against bad software patents.

Fade Text In on Page Load

Fade Text In on Page Load 01/23/2004 12:10 AM

I learned a neat little HTML/Javascript trick on the about page of the newly launched Orkut from Google.

Here is the trick (be fast, or reload the page):

This text will fade in on page load. But this text won't (It's displayed in-line as the page is built).

It's accomplished with code that looks like this:

<html>
<head>
<script language="javascript">
col=255;
function fade() { document.getElementById("fade").style.color="rgb(" + col + "," + col + "," + col + ")"; col-=5; if(col>0) setTimeout('fade()', 10); }
</script>
</head>

<body onLoad="fade()">

<p>
<span id="fade">This text will fade in.</span> But this text won't.
</p>

</body></html>

Pretty cool huh?

(If it doesn't seem to work for you, it's probably because this page loads pretty slowly... see the individual archive page for it to look more natural.)
