Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile
apps need mobile
devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one
or two slots
for application cartridges. Each cartridge contains one or
more applications.
Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the
phone app as well as
others.
Adding a cartridge adds new apps. Applications have two
modes: running and stopped.
The Next-App
button (aka
Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in
turn. Some apps
can activate itself when an event fires (phone call
received). To see the list
of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.
Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform
cartridges, taking over
the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better
application platform services
than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app
download service that auto-configures
apps for your device). If you don't like the built-in
calender, just stop it
and run a third-party calendar instead.

Developing 64-bit Applications
Developing 64-bit Applications
12/22/2004 12:59 AMMac OS X Tiger breaks the limitations of 32-bit computing and allows
developers to create command-line applications, servers, and
computation engines that can work with mind-blowing amounts of memory.
Previous versions of Mac OS X have been able to take advantage of more
than 4GB of system memory when running on a G5-equipped Mac, but each
application was still subject to the 4GB limit imposed by a 32-bit
address space. Tiger obliterates that restriction and allows
applications to access a 64-bit address space when running on the
PowerPC G5. Better yet, this support comes with no compromise in the
ability to run current 32-bit applications.

12/23/2002 05:51 AMToday's demanding eLearning development enviornment has left many
development teams befuddled while trying to satisfy several
initiatives and standards to make government and industry eLearning
more efficient (508 Accessibility, SCORM). Not having a formal
planning process representative of these requirements can be the means
to end of any web-based training application. The process for web
application development is well suited for integration with the
Instructional Design ADDIE-M model.

Developing Custom PHP Extensions
Developing Custom PHP Extensions
03/11/2003 01:22 AMWell i'm pleased to say that i've just learned to write my first PHP
extension, thanks to the above link. It accepts parameters, does some
processing and spits out the results. The latest php manual has an
extensive
Extending PHP
section which is pretty good.
I've never had the time to learn how to write PHP extensions before
this. The only free time i have to learn this is at home, where i
don't have a Linux box, but i do have VC++. It's really really painful
because i haven't coded in C for about 2 years, but you don't forget
your roots.
I've been saying for years that we can port ADOdb to C if we really need the
speed. Now i can do it, if we are all willing to endure constant bugs
for a couple of months. Might even drive me crazy, C is no longer easy
for me (err, when was it ever easy...).
Now that i'm in the mood, how do i write a cross-platform extension?

AOL Developing New Registration Process
08/04/2004 10:14 PMAmerica Online is testing a new user interface for the AOL
registration process called "Prelude". Prelude has been distributed to
several thousands testers, but, according to AOL, is not an indication
that there is any new client software on its way. Despite
disassociating Prelude from any major development efforts, AOL does
have some tricks hidden up its sleeve.
Fanfare, a next-generation alternative to the
classic AOL client software for AOL for Broadband members, is
currently being undergoing development.

MIT developing $100 laptops for children
MIT developing $100 laptops for children
04/04/2005 07:27 PM
In a rural Cambodian village where the homes lack electricity, the
nighttime darkness is pierced by the glow from laptops that children
bring from school.
The students were equipped with notebook computers by a foundation run
by MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte and his wife Elaine.
"When the kids bring them home and open them up, it's the
brightest light source in the home," said Negroponte.
"Parents love it."
Negroponte and some MIT colleagues are hard at work on a project they
hope will brighten the lives and prospects of hundreds of millions of
developing world kids. It's a grand idea and a daunting challenge: to
create rugged, Internet- and multimedia-capable laptop computers at a
cost of $100 apiece. The laptops would be mass-produced in orders of no
smaller than 1 million units and bought by governments, which would
distribute them.

Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone
Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone
08/03/2004 10:50 AM

All DefenseTech has to do to get my
attention is say "SR-71" and I'm turgid with anticipation, so when
they passed along information that the Air Force is developing a
top-secret (not anymore, suckers!) super-stealthy UAV (unmanned aerial
vehicle) that will act as a sort of robotic update to the Blackbird, I
was, suffice it to say, like whoa. Apparently, since slipping
deadlines have caused the next generation of spy satellites to be
delayed, Air Force commanders are rushing to develop an unmanned plane
that can not only travel at high speeds to high altitudes for long
distance reconnaissance, but can also deploy weapons ranging from
"high-precision munitions to devices that can emit pulses of
electromagnetic energy to wreak havoc on everything from power grids
to electronic equipment."
Although there don't appear to be pictures of the new death bird
flying yet, sources indicate the new system is based on research done
on the Tier II (which became the Global Hawk UAV) and Lockheed's
Darkstar [pictured].
I love me some flying death robots, I do.

Hello and welcome to part one of the "Developing Custom PHP
Extensions" article series. After reading this article’s name, one of
the first things you might be asking yourself is: what exactly is a
PHP extension? After knowing the answer to that question, the next one
– presumably – will be: what are PHP extensions needed for? And
finally (assuming you have not lost your interest), the last question
will be: How do I develop my own extensions?
In this series of articles I will answer those questions in my
favorite way: developing our own "useful" PHP extension from scratch.
However, before we reach that goal, we must answer some of the
questions mentioned above.
