A myriad of markup systems

A myriad of markup systems 04/12/2004 11:15 PM

It's hard to avoid the legions of custom markup systems out there these days. Every Wiki has it's own syntactical quirks, while packages like Markdown, Textile, BBCode (in dozens of variants), reStructuredText offer easy ways of hooking markup conversion in to existing applications. When it comes to being totally over-implemented and infuratingly inconsistent, markup systems are rapidly catching up with template packages. Never one to miss out on an opportunity to reinvent the wheel, I've worked on several of each ;)

My most recent markup handling attempt has just been published as part of my SitePoint article on Bookmarklets (cl iché). It's a structured markup language in a bookmarklet: activate the bookmarklet to convert the text in any textarea on a page to XHTML. The syntax is ridiculously simple, and serves my limited needs just fine:

= This is a header

Here is a paragraph.

* This is a list of items
* Another item in the list

Converts to:

<h4>This is a header</h4>

<p>Here is a paragraph.</p>

<ul>
 <li>This is a list of items</li>
 <li>Another item in the list</li>
</ul>

The algorithm is simple, and easily portable to any language you care to mention:

  1. Normalise newlines to \n, for cross-platform consistency.
  2. Split the text up on double newlines, to create a list of blocks.
  3. For each block:
    1. If it starts with an equals sign, wrap it in header tags.
    2. If it starts with an asterisk, split it in to lines, make each a list item (stripping off the asterisk at the start of the line if required) and glue them all together inside a <ul>.
    3. Otherwise, wrap it in a <p> tag provided it doesn't have one already.
  4. Glue everything back together again with a couple of newlines, to make the underlying XHTML look pretty.

The bookmarklet comes in two flavours: Expand HTML Shorthand (the full version) and Expand HTML Shorthand IE, which loses header support in order to fit within IE's rippling 508 character limit. A more capable bookmarklet could be built using the import-script-stub method described in my article, but the implementation of such a thing is left as an exercise for the reader (I've always wanted to say that).

Incidentally, there's a very common bug in markup systems that allow inline styles that proves extremely difficult to fix: that of improperly nested tags. Say you have a system where *text* is bold and _text_ is italic; what happens when the user enters _italic*italic-bold_bold*? Most systems (and that includes Markdown, Textile and my home-rolled Python solution) use naive regular expressions for inline markup processing and will output vadly formed XHTML: <em>italic<strong>italic-bold</em>bold </strong>. To truly solve this problem requires a context-sensitive parser, which involves an unpleasantly large amount of effort to solve what looks like a simple bug.

Hybrid CSS dropdowns allow access to all pages, keep the user aware of where she is within the site, and are clean and light to boot. It's a tasty little vitamin pill, so quit sighing and try it.

Hybrid Financial Analysis

Hybrid Financial Analysis 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Cost savings may not offset higher price for hybrids: Gas-electric hybrids are expensive, but you get all that money back in gas savings, right? Well, probably not.

The study, the latest on break-even points of hybrid cars, shows that in most cases, an owner would have to drive a hybrid tens of thousands of extra miles a year or gasoline would have to hit stratospheric levels to reach a break-even point with a comparable gas-powered model.

[...] When compared with the smaller, gas-thrifty conventional Corolla, the Prius wouldn't equal the five-year costs unless it were driven 66,500 miles a year or gas reached $10.10 a gallon.

Depressing. But the prices will come down, I'm sure.

Hybrid Solar Lighting

Hybrid Solar Lighting 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

world_science.jpgOak Ridge National Laboratory, which conducts all of its research in tuneful four part harmony, has developed a system that uses sunlight (I actually started to write 'solar-powered light') pumped down fiber-optic tubes to complement an integrated system of flourscent bulbs. When there's sufficient light outside, a sensor cuts the electric blubs, letting the light shine in. Obviously, piping light from roofs to fixtures is something that's best done when the buildings are actually built, but it's a great idea all the same.

Of course, they don't mention that the light snakes down around your throat as you sit in satori, attempting to harness the power of mind to expand your forehead real estate. (Thanks, Boo Boo Prime!)

While Scout recently reported on hybrid automobiles from the current make and model point of view, this topic in depth explores the history and technology of electric and hybrid cars and considers the options available for car buyers and the future of fuel cell technology. This article from the Detroit News suggests electric vehicles are becoming popular (1). The second website (1) provides an interactive history and archived documents about the development of electric vehicles. The third link describes a specific program involving U.S. corporations and the Federal government (2). The fourth link takes you to Argonne Laboratories transportation website, which provides articles and reviews recent research developments (3). If you are looking to buy an electric or hybrid car this website provides information on the various alternative vehicles and, and California residents can find out about state government-sponsored incentives for car buyers (4). This last website from the Why Files offers an analysis of some of the pros and cons of electric vehicles and suggests fuel cells have more potential (5). Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

Economics of Scientific and Biomedical Journals by Haekyung Jeon–Slaughter, Andrew A. Herkovic, and Michael A. Keller
htt p://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/jeon/index.html

Abstract:
The emergence of e–journals brought a great change in scholarly communication and in the behavior of scholars. However, the importance of scholars’ behavior in the pricing of scientific journal has been largely ignored in the recent debate between libraries and publishers over site license practices and pricing schemes. Stanford’s survey results indicate that sharply increasing costs are the main reason for individual subscription cancellation, driving users to rely on library or other institutional subscriptions. Libraries continue to be a vital information provider in the electronic era and their bargaining power in the market and the importance of roles in scholarly communication will be increased by branding and a strong relationship with users. Publishers’ strategy for thriving in the electronic era is not to lose personal subscribers. Cooperation among the three sectors — scholars, libraries, and publishers — promises optimal results for each sector more than ever.

Lessons learned from online journals

Lessons learned from online journals 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
There are lessons to be learned from the first round of online journals, hammered out over time in the private spheres of close friends and associates. Many from that time have moved on to other things, but their legacy remains at the core of blogging's foundations. Write for an audience of friends. When you have an audience of a million people, there's no way to anticipate what the best viewpoint to reach them all is; remember that your writing is an expression of your viewpoint, and express it as such. Express your viewpoint as if you were talking to a group of friends: clear, to the point, and perhaps a dash of humor. Aesthetics speak a thousand words. The appearance of a site frames the content contained within, setting the tone for the reader. If your color schemes makes it...

Scientists launch open-access journals

Scientists launch open-access journals 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

A group of scientists launched an open-access scientific journals project: the Public Library of Science . Supported by a $9 million grant from the Moore Foundation , the two journals, Public Library of Science Biology and Public Library of Science Medicine , are planned to appear in 2003.
The thinking behind the project is the argument that scientific research is a public good, and should be accessible to all , in the interests of education and informed public debate. The project participates in a larger movement of open-access scholarly journals , and:

is an outgrowth of several years of friction between scientists and the journals over who should control access to scientific literature in the electronic age. For most scientists, who typically assign their copyright to the journals for no compensation, the main goal is to distribute their work as widely as possible.
