U.K. Rails Getting Wi-Fi

U.K. Rails Getting Wi-Fi 11/10/2003 10:54 PM
Broadreach is building Wi-Fi hot spots in 20 stations along Virgin's west coast rail line in the U.K.: The hot spots will just cover the stations. The article says the network will "likely" use satellite for the downstream and cellular for the up. The operator of the east coast line in the U.K., GNER, is also building hot spots over its stations. Busy train lines in the U.S. should be working on this too. One in San Jose already is, but I haven't heard of any Wi-Fi coverage over lines on the east coast along busy corridors around Washington, D.C., or New York....

Riding the Rails

Riding the Rails 07/25/2004 09:09 AM

David Heinemeier Hansson has published the first release of Rails, his MVC implementation for Ruby. Rails is the system David developed to power BaseCamp, the 37 Signals project management app. David had previously released Active Record, his O-R mapping layer for Rails, which is the slickest method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what his MVC implementation looks like.

We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have been employees of Microsoft or Sun.

vCalendar/iCalendar Events

If you maintain a web calendar, the vCalendar/iCalendar specifications can help you share calendar events with users through your site. By clicking on a simple link to a text file, your events can be added to your users' Outlook, Palm Desktop, or scheduling program of their choice. Such an application can be easy, simple, and automated if the event data is stored in a database, and the text file is formatted to the vCalendar/iCalendar specification with any scripting language. -- Shu-Wai Chow

'Stunned' Apple rails against Real's
iPod move
07/29/2004 09:42 AM
Apple Computer on Thursday issued a scathing response to RealNetworks' move to unlock Apple's proprietary technology and make it possible for people to listen to music in RealNetworks' digital file format on iPod devices.

In a terse statement, a "stunned" Apple accused RealNetworks of adopting "the tactics and ethics of a hacker" with the release of its Harmony software, which allows songs sold via its online store to be played on a variety of portable devices, including Apple's iPod and Microsoft-compatible rivals. Apple threatened to block access to the iPod using Harmony the next time it updates the software used to run the device. The company last week unveiled the fourth generation of the trend-setting music player.

"It is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will cease to work with current and future iPods," the company said in its statement. In addition, Apple said that it is investigating the implications of Real's software strategy under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and other laws. The DMCA broadly restricts the bypassing of copy-protection technologies used in DVDs and in some music CDs and software programs.

A first look at JavaServer Faces, Part 1

A first look at JavaServer Faces, Part 1 01/06/2003 11:38 PM
JavaServer Faces (JSF) is an application framework for creating Web-based user interfaces. If you are familiar with Struts (a popular open source JSP-based Web application framework) and Swing (the standard Java user interface framework for desktop applications), think of JavaServer Faces as a combination of those two frameworks. Like Struts, JSF provides Web application lifecycle management through a controller servlet; and like Swing, JSF provides a rich component model complete with event handling and component rendering. -- David Geary "btn" Also read this discussion on JSF with the authors of the spec. This looks very interesting. I like it a lot because it appears more natural than MVC. Some of the ideas on designing user interfaces are very similar to what we have done in our commercial software, phpLens. I also suspect that a careful blending of the best features of JavaServer Faces and MVC could result in a more flexible application framework. Anyone in the PHP world want to take up the challenge? But first we have to find a better name than JavaServer Faces... "zeldman.tat"

Basecamp and Ruby

Rails: So what was the biggest shock of the Basecamp seminar? Finding out that it was written in Ruby. Yeah, that's right — that Japanese language that you thought no one was using. They've apparently put together a Web development framework for it which they're releasing to open-source.

Rails is a soon-to-be-released web application framework for Ruby. It's built upon well-understood patterns for web development, which should make the seasoned web developer feel right at home and the newcomer welcome.

The programmer guy had nothing but good things to say about it. He claimed he was more productive with it in one week than he was with PHP after five years.

Nolan walked over to my desk and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around in my chair and looked into his cheshire grin.

"What are you doing?" I said.

"Oh . . . I just saw something I thought you may be interested in." I noticed that he had one hand behind his back.
