03/22/2005 05:00 PMXeni Jardin:

My blog-mate David Pescovitz and I were interviewed for a
Sydney
Morning Herald story about the Bloggies (Boing Boing was among
this year's winners). A nifty infographic ran along with the story.
It's based on Technorati data, and points to some of the events/memes
which led to the greatest spikes in blog traffic from 2004-2005. You
know something's wrong with the online world when "Kryptonite Lock
Controversy" inspires roughly the same amount of posts per day as
"Indian Ocean Tsunami," though there may be more to the data than
meets the eye.
Link to story (subscription

Update: On his blog, Boing Boing reader Tim
Jarrett offers
one possible explanation for the Kryptonite-versus-Tsunami data
oddity:
I say: it’s not the absolute size of the spike, it’s how it
relates to its surroundings. (Uh, bow chicka chicka bow bow.) Based on
my experience interpreting online traffic, the metric of merit when
comparing two events isn’t absolute amount of traffic (posts, page
views, unique users) but the delta they cause from the normal volume
of activity. Look at the time period around “Kryptonite lock
controversy”—the spike, while high, is part of a consistently high
series of spikes that appears to run from July through shortly after
the election. In other words, not dramatic, considering the overall
blogosphere activity at that time.
The tsunami, on the other hand, reached the same peak of activity
in the middle of a seasonal down period in blog posts—in fact, as I
recall, a seasonal down period for Internet activity as a whole. In
other words, it’s a hell of a lot more impressive that a bunch of
bloggers got off their haunches after the holidays to post about the
tsunami—when they weren’t inclined to blog—than that they posted
in a period of otherwise high post activity.

hopes of getting work visas under a program President Bush proposed.
Many also are trying to beat tighter security to come in June.

NYTimes Teen Mag Spikes Story On Why
Downloading Isn't Stealing
01/09/2004 09:50 PMI have no idea the full details behind the story, but
The New York Times
Upfront, which is apparently a NY Times produced magazine for
teens, had asked Aaron Swartz to write a "counterpoint" story on
downloading music. Aaron wrote up a short piece entitled "Downloading
Isn't Stealing" and the NY Times decided not to run it. Aaron claims
that the reason they gave him was "the Times had decided not to tell
kids to break the law." Aaron has decided to go ahead and
publish the piece
himself. While I agree with the premise (as has been discussed to
death on this site), I don't necessarily agree with the specifics of
his argument. Downloading
might be copyright infringement, but
it's clearly not theft (even the Supreme Court
has said
so). What's more interesting to me is why the magazine spiked the
piece. I'm not sure if folks at Upfront have a different explanation
for why they spiked the piece - but if it is the reason Aaron gives,
then that's pretty sad, and suggests that we're not teaching kids
these days to understand the complexity of issues, but prefer to
brainwa
sh kids with simple (but untrue) maxims. I guess this isn't a
huge surprise, but you can always hope.

manager?
Answered yes to any of those questions?
If so, read How
to manage smart people by Scott Berkun.
Quick article that's full of great little tips like:
The following phrase is one of my favorite tools as a
manager: What do you need from me in order to kick ass on this
project? Asking this question of a report invariably scares the shit
out of them. Its a cut to the chase, where you, as manager, lay out
on the table the magic wish list of possibilities, and asks them to
put their cards on the table. If a good discussion ensues, you then
have the opportunity to actually deliver some of the things they might
need. All the pet complaints theyve been harboring have a chance to
surface, and perhaps, simply fade away in the face of your brutal
honesty and openness as a manager.

Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises
Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises
05/23/2004 09:00 PMEnterprises are reacting sensibly to the issue of low-speed (20 Mbps
or slower) Wi-Fi interference techniques documented by Australian
researchers: It's not so much a flaw as a part of the spec that allows
a certain kind of attack to disable an access point; there are many
others of varying degree of severity, too, including just bringing an
unpleasant 2.4 GHz cordless phone into an office and leaving it turned
on without a connection to a cordless base station. The reaction cited
in this Computerworld article is sensible: managers are examining
their risk and noting that with many access points, an attacker would
have to attack numerous locations at once to have an effect, and would
then be vulnerable to physical detection. All 802.11a and any 802.11g
networks running at faster encodings (using OFDM) can't be attacked in
this fashion, either....
