Pope John Paul II has had a
heart attack. Soon, the
College
a>
of Cardinals
will
assemble
to
choose
his successor. Even in death, however, this pontiff will exert
extraordinary control over
the process, having
elevated an
unprecedented number of clerics to this body.
The choice of
Jaime
Lucas Ortega y Alamino,
archbishop of Havana, would
continue
John Paul II's
legacy of opposition to communism and totalitarianism. Another
frontrunner is the socially conservative Nigerian Cardinal
Fr
ancis Arinze.
Arinze would continue John Paul II's cultural legacy while
recognizing the
demographic
reality
of modern global Catholicism. Also mentioned as a frontrunner is
Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga
of Honduras, a strong
proponent of third world debt relief. Progressives would welcome
the elevation of German Cardinal
Walter Kasper,
an
advocate
for religious tolerance and pluralism, or the moderate Italian
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re,
a frequent

during the Holy Week ceremonies. Conservatives favor Columbian
Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos. Hoyos shares the Pope's
traditionalist

of a church
at odds with modernity.
But the smart
money,
is on
Dionigi Tettamanzi.

Trusting the ballot
Trusting the ballot
01/09/2004 09:53 PMAccording to an article in yesterday's Miami Herald: In Tuesday's
special election to fill state House seat 91, 134 Broward voters
managed to use the 2-year-old touch-screen equipment without casting
votes for any candidate... The percentage of nonvotes — 1.3
percent — is modest compared to the days of ''hanging'' and
''pregnant chads.'' But in Tuesday's race, every vote was crucial. In
a seven-candidate field, Ellyn Bogdanoff beat Oliver Parker by just 12
votes. The non-votes may be due to Democrats entering the voting booth
only to discover that there were no Democrats on the ballot. But the
mere suspicion...

The Vatican vs. Dan Brown
03/17/2005 03:56 AMDavid Pescovitz:
The Vatican has
appointed Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone to speak out against Dan
Brown's
The
Da Vinci Code. From Reuters:
"A lot of novels do good but this book is rotten food
... it does harm, not good," Bertone said in the 30-minute interview
in the offices of the Vatican's doctrinal department.
"This book is a sack full of lies against the Church, against the real
history of Christianity and against Christ himself," said Bertone,
archbishop of northern Genoa.... "I would ask the author of this book
and similar ones to be more respectful because freedom of expression
has limits when it does not respect others," he said...
Bertone said he was stunned that Catholic bookstores, even those near
the Vatican, were selling the book.
"It's impossible to pull the book off shelves of general bookstores
... but certainly not selling it in Catholic bookstores would be a
good first step," he said.

05/13/2004 05:10 AMThe Vatican's official astronomer, Brother Guy Consolmagno, has given
an interview in which he discusses the Vatican's thinking on what to
do if alien intelligence is discovered.
We find an intelligent civilization and there's no way in creation we
can communicate with them because they're so alien to us. We can't
talk to dolphins now. In which case, we'll never know.
Second scenario: We find the intelligent civilization. We can
communicate. We discover that they have the two essentials that
theologians talk about for the human soul, intelligence and free will.
They know who they are, they're self-aware, and they're able to do
something about it. I think dogs are self-aware, but they don't have a
whole lot of free will. Maybe computers are the same sort of thing.
Human beings have to have both...
A third scenario: We find a dozen civilizations out there, and a bunch
of Jehovah's witnesses go up and convert them all. At the end of the
day, every civilization is Christian, except the human race is still
not too sure about this. I mean, anything's possible.

The Pope to Women: “get back in your
place” — The Vatican, fearing it may still share some
semblance of the same reality as the rest of us seeks to rectify this
problem by telling women that they should stop hoping for the same
things as men have.
“The obscuring of the difference or
duality of the sexes has enormous consequences on a variety of
levels,” the document said, asserting it has inspired ideologies
that “call into question the family, in its natural two-parent
structure of mother and father.”
It also warned of
challenges to fundamentals of church teaching, saying the blurring of
differences “would consider as lacking in importance and relevance
the fact that the Son of God assumed human nature in its male
form.” Grok Description matches for Vatican prepares for papal ballot
