Successful test liftoff for John

Successful test liftoff for John
Carmack's XPrize contender craft
06/20/2004 09:36 AM
John Carmack may be best known for the legendary electronic game Doom -- but his latest venture is the development of a space craft to compete in the $10 million Ansari Xprize. A craft built by Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace had a succcessful test flight earlier this week:
"The flight was perfect. It went 131 feet high, and landed less than one foot from the launch point," Carmack reported on his web site. "It can easily do flights three times as long, which may show up some problems before we hit them with the big vehicle."

Armadillo's rocket concept makes use of a hydrogen peroxide monopropellant.

Carmack said the vehicle's auto-land system worked perfectly, softly settling down on its tail section. "I had tried several algorithms on the simulator before settling on this one, and it behaved exactly the same in reality, which is always a pleasant surprise."

Robotic Floats Test Iron Hypothesis

Robotic Floats Test Iron Hypothesis 04/17/2004 07:11 PM
The Iron Hypothesis predicts that if portions of the ocean were seeded with iron, a plankton bloom would result, sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and offsetting the greenhouse effect. A new LBNL article says three robotic Carbon Explorer floats, launched by scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at part of the Southern Ocean Iron Experiment (SOFeX) tracked a small-scale test of the hypothesis and seem to support the theory. They measured a four-fold growth of plankton over a two-month period and collected data that indicates the plankton fix the carbon dioxide and send it to the ocean floor. The Carbon Explorer robots are modified versions of the SOLO floats that we've reported on before.

A multi-purpose ramp lets the X-Craft launch a variety of "manned and unmanned surface and sub-surface vehicles," like inflatable boats and scouting submarine drones. DefenseTech has the details—I say we chip in and make Gizmodo a floating, mobile operation.

Safari Hates Me

Safari Hates Me 01/31/2003 03:59 PM

I've been trying my hardest to get the dynamic portions of this site to work in Safari. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the scripts, Safari just doesn't recognize my second Javascript file. It all works great in every browser but Safari, but anything I do in my second JS file has no effect on the page. I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm running out of ideas. If the site acts a little funny in the next couple hours it may be because I'm pulling my hair out and messing around with the Javascript to try and get it to work fine. Other sites are rendering Javascript as complex as mine in Safari without issue, hence I'm convinced Safari just has it out for me. I'll update when I have more information, and less of a headache. PLEASE leave me a comment or an email if you have any ideas.

Barnbrook is the po litically savage designer behind the Virus typefoundry, and is probably most well-known for collaborations with Damien Hirst and the typefaces Exocet and Mason (which was originally called Manson – and "intended to speak of the uncomfortable associations between elegance and violence" – but was renamed Mason in a fit of pique marketing), which are sold through the fine folks at Emigre.

No, don't ask us where to find these things. We don't know. I do know that a backpack lined with this stuff and a Hallmark store would make me the happiest Hummel collector in the world.

Michael Moore Hates America

Michael Moore Hates America 05/19/2004 04:14 PM
Michael Moore Hates America is a new documentary looking to discredit filmmaker Michael Moore. Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11 is causing quite a stir at the Cannes Film Festival, where it has been met with rave reviews, and standing ovations lasting upwards of 20 minutes. With Moore's recent distribution problems with the film, a new project seeks to challenge Moore to distribute his film for free via the internet to prove that "the message is more important than the money," and to silence his critics, who contend that with the immense profits his controversial film is sure to garner, he is a "war profiteer" just like Halliburton.
