Snaking over Rugged Terrain

Snaking over Rugged Terrain 03/23/2005 01:09 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "Engineers from the University of Michigan have developed a snake-like robot that conquers obstacles. It is composed of 5 segments of 8-inch diameter each and weighs 26 pounds. It is currently piloted by a human operator and can maneuver in extremely rugged terrain, climbing stairs and pipes. 'It moves by rolling, log-style, or by lifting its head or tail, inchworm-like, and muscling itself forward.' The robot will be used for industrial inspection and surveillance in hazardous environments, and also for military and urban search and rescue operations." For more details and photos of the robot, see Roland's blog. See also our earlier story on a smaller snake-like robot developed by NASA.

Nokia Ships Rugged 5140 Sports Phone,

06/23/2004 12:14 PM

nokia_5140.gif imageNokia has begun shipping the new 5140 camera phone, aimed at "outdoor and sports-minded consumers." Even better, the rugged phone is Nokia's first push-to-talk phone, so hopefully we'll see it picked up by Sprint or Nextel as an option. As for the fitness part, Nokia has included some software to like stopwatches, a 'Fitness Coach' personal training program, and rugged Xpress-on shells -- one of which even adds GPS capabilities. Sounds interesting, but I think we'll wait to pass judgement until we can play around with one. Also, did someone punch Nokia's designer in the eye the day they came up with the 5140? Maybe they were embarrassed to say they got in a fight or something, so they just went into work anyway and sort of blindly fucked around in AutoCad or whatever until their boss told them they could go home.

CC on Seybold DRM Panel

CC on Seybold DRM Panel 08/17/2004 06:59 PM

I'm speaking on a DRM Roundtable 10:30AM tomorrow at Seybold San Francisco. The panel will address current and future trends in Digital Rights Management (or the pejorative: Digital Restrictions Management).

We have two FAQs addressing Creative Commons and DRM, reproduced below:

Is Creative Commons involved in digital rights management (DRM)?

No; we prefer to describe the technical aspect of our work as digital rights description. Whereas digital rights management tools try to prevent certain uses of copyright works and restrict your rights, we're trying to promote certain uses and grant you rights. Instead of having software say, "No, you cannot modify this file," we want it to say something more like "The author will let you modify this file, but in return, give her credit."

While the tools are similar, our goals are different. Instead of using one of the many DRM formats, we've chosen to go with the W3C's RDF/XML format. Instead of saying "We're not placing these restrictions," we say "We grant you these permissions," so that search engines and other applications can easily find generously licensed works and sort them.

A physical analogy may be helpful. It's DRM's job to put up signs that say "No Trespassing." It would seem silly to take those signs and change them to say "Yes Trespassing," which is what using a DRM format to express our licenses would be like. Instead, we're building new signs that say "Welcome, Please Come In," and that use different colors and designs to convey their different messages.

We're leaving "enforcement" to the law, social norms, and the good faith of the participants. Our tools act as informative aids, not instruments of control. We want to help copyright holders notify others of their obligations and freedoms, and to help everyone find places on the Internet where creative reuses are encouraged.

What happens if someone tries to protect a CC-licensed work with digital rights management (DRM) tools?

If a person uses DRM tools to restrict any of the rights granted in the license, that person violates the license. All of our licenses prohibit licensees from "distributing the Work with any technological measures that control access or use of the Work in a manner inconsistent with the terms of this License Agreement."

For those not lucky enough to attend the panel, in addition to covering the FAQ points above I will give examples for positive use cases of Digital Rights Description in the areas of

  • Discovery
  • Expression
  • Commerce
  • Resource Management

and draw some broad distinctions between DRM and DRD:

  • Copy/Use promotion vs. Copy/Use protection
  • Encourage fans vs. Discourage casual pirates
  • Resource management vs. Customer management
  • Web content model vs. 20 Web content model

The ViewSonic Laptop... From The Future

The ViewSonic Laptop... From The Future 03/24/2005 08:31 PM
This is the type of piece that we normally save for slow Fridays, but it's a slow Thursday, so here you go. It appears that the folks at Amazon listed a ViewSonic laptop (they make laptops?) where they put a few extra zeros in the data, such that it was pumping out some serious power. The processor ran at 10 GHz and the hard-drive could store a cool 30,000 GB. This is when some folks with more than a little extra free time decided to write some amusing reviews of this laptop from the future. The more you read , the more amusing they get. Amazon has fixed the typos (amusingly, the Techweb article has a typo of its own, saying that the real hard drive is only "30 MB" suggesting it's not so hard to make an error in the other direction as well) but the reviews keep coming: "Mine just arrived yesterday, and man is it fast. I loaded Folding At Home (FAH), and it instantly found a cure for cancer and parkinsons. It was also able to run a brute force discovery of every prime number; It reached infinity in under 32 seconds!!! It turns out that there are only 32,994,234,116,781,042 prime numbers!!! Not bad huh?"

Not so much of a review as an attempt to pick up his jaw off the floor, this article at TrustedReviews details the ViewSonic VP2290b, an $8,500 monitor (with a $2,000 video card) with an amazing 3,840 x 2,400 resolution spread out across its 22.2-inches. To give you some idea of what that means, an image from a 9.2-megapixel camera could be displayed pixel-for-pixel on the monitor without any scaling down. Powered by a single Parhelia HR256 with dual-DVI outs, the VP2290b is has top-notch image quality, but a relatively low refresh rate, meaning that even if you steal one from your college's research laboratories, you probably won't want to play videogames on one -- not that you could find a 3D card that could power it.
