Questions and Answers About PressThink 04/29/2004 12:18 AM
Hi. If you're the kind of person who loves to complain about "meta" posts and make fun of blogging about blogging for being too self-referential, which is a fine and amusing thing to do... please. Don't read this post. You'll hate it. It's the echo chamber again. Q & A about how I do my blog, PressThink. Very self-referential, okay? Meta meta, yadda yadda, blog, blog, blog for pages on pages. Some questions and answers about cooking

Some questions and answers about cooking 09/25/2004 11:33 AM
Folks have written asking some questions about how I'm making the transition from geek to chef, and rather than reply individually, I thought I'd do a little public Q & A to share with all. I am curious what steps you took to make the change. You're cooking in the kitchen of a good restaurant? When I first arrived on Nantucket I met the owners of Fifty-Six Union through my aunt. Over the course of the summer, I talked with them about my interest in cooking and spent some time hostessing during August. Peter, the chef, recommended that before I head to culinary school, I spend six months working in a kitchen to see if I really wanted to do it. So I asked him if I could work in his kitchen, and he generously said yes. And yes, Fifty-Six is a good restaurant, and Peter is a graduate of the CIA. [H]aving spent my formative years slaving away in a hot kitchen for my parents' Chinese takeaway, I can't imagine what on earth you like about it! I like the energy of the kitchen, of being on my feet and being active. I love the way I get consumed in what I'm doing, almost lost. Last night I looked at the clock and it was 7 PM, a little while later (it seemed) I checked again and it was nearly 10! I'd just been in the moment, making salads and apps and desserts. I love the short life-cycle of a kitchen day. Unlike a software project that takes weeks to months to years (to even never!) to complete, in the kitchen the order comes in, you prepare it, and it's gone. By the end of the night, the "project" is over and the battle is won. I love the satisfaction of making something people enjoy. I made an apple tarte tatin for last night's dessert special. I plated an order and thirty minutes later, the server told me, "They loved the apple tart and were raving!" I love doing lots of things at once and figuring out the most efficient way to do it, and I love to be under pressure and make it all happen and get it right. I love sending out a perfect plate. I just wanted to ask how you got into cooking.. did you need to take any formal training, or was it primarily on the job? did you take a pay cut? I've always loved cooking and baking, ever since I was little. During college I always had food service jobs (made ice cream, worked in a pie shop on Cape Cod, etc.) and learned some skills there. And I've just been a passionate home cook, reading and learning as much as I could from doing and watching Iron Chef and other cooking programs. I've realized that I knew more than I thought and also that I have a long way to go. And yes, I took a pay cut. Cooks with no professional experience do not make the same salary as software engineering managers with 10 years experience. If you have further questions, feel free to write! Obviously I have less time for posting than in the past, but I'll try. And soon too, a post about my first impressions...

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, someone had the idea that science would be at its most interesting when it was being subverted. Just as science itself was developing, storytellers began expanding the worlds of physics, biology, chemistry and engineering. They came up with a universe full of lightsabers, spaceships and robots, steeped in a heady brew of technobabble and draped on a background of journeys to exotic worlds. But science…

Wikipedia Founder Answers Questions

Wikipedia Founder Answers Questions 07/28/2004 04:28 PM

Slashdot has posted an interview with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. In the usual SlashDot style, the ten highest-rated questions from the community were the ones they asked. Good stuff.

It is my intention to get a copy of Wikipedia to every single person on the planet in their own language. It is my intention that free textbooks from our wikibooks project will be used to revolutionize education in developing countries by radically cutting the cost of content.

Those kinds of big picture ideals make people very passionate about what we're doing. And it makes it possible for people to set aside a lot of personal differences and disputes of the kind that I talked about above, and just compromise to keep getting the work done.

I frequently counsel people who are getting frustrated about an edit war to think about someone who lives without clean drinking water, without any proper means of education, and how our work might someday help that person. It puts flamewars into some perspective, I think.

Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing.

Heck yeah! You have to love a project that hopes to directly change the world, and has a fair chance at pulling it off. (OK, you don't have to love it, but we'll still humbly suggest that you love it on occasion.) If I won the lotto, Wikipedia would get a big donation.

USATODAY.com - The interim Iraqi government took power last week from the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority. The new government faces challenges including an insurgency by Sunni Muslim extremists and Saddam Hussein loyalists in Fallujah and other cities, unrest among the followers of firebrand Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, a Jan. 31 deadline for holding national elections, rampant street crime and sporadic electricity and other services. The interim government is led by Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. President Ghazi al-Yawer, 45, and two deputy presidents must unanimously approve any legislation proposed by Allawi's government. Yawer is a popular tribal leader and a business executive. USA TODAY reporter Paul Wiseman spoke with him Sunday at his heavily guarded office inside Baghdad's Green Zone compound. The bespectacled Yawer wore traditional Arab robes and a headdress and spoke in near-perfect English. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Directing queries through Internet search engines has become one of the most popular online activities. Statistics released from a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive show that users accessed search engines more often than they used the Net for entertainment, e-commerce or IM/chat. Over half of the respondents (53%) said they used search engines most or every time they went online, and only 4% said they had never used a search engine. Only two activities were more popular than search: sending or receiving e-mail (87%) and general Web surfing (55%). How the respondents used search engines was also interesting. The top reasons were for researching specific topics (88%), getting directions or maps (75%), looking for news (64%) and shopping (51%). Internet search engines also seem to be replacing the telephone for some tasks, with a total of 54% reporting having used a search engine instead of using a phone. Different search engines seem to be better for searching for different topics. For example, MSN and Ask Jeeves users were more apt to search for medical and health information. Ask Jeeves users were also more likely to look for maps and directions. Google users tended to search more for news, perhaps a result of the Google News search page. According to data from Nielsen//NetRatings, Google is by far the most popular search engine in the US, with a 48% market share. Yahoo! is next with 21%, followed by MSN with 12%, AOL with 5% and Ask Jeeves with 2%. Google users are also the most loyal. Thirteen percent of US adults who use Google use it exclusively, compared to 11% for AOL, 10% for MSN, 7% for Yahoo!/Overture and 2.4% for Ask Jeeves.
