FCC Approves TiVoToGo
08/05/2004 08:45 AM
Although public policy isn't really our
niche, there are occasional bits of regulation that are notable for
the future products they herald, like the approval yesterday by the
FCC of a plan by TiVo to allow sharing of recorded content to up to 10
other users via a new service called TiVoToGo. The first
implementations will probably be local network -- sending to other
TiVos and PCs around your house -- but there's certainly the
possibility that sharing over the internet could be implemented, as
well.
Unless the approval gets shut down by the numerous groups
protesting the approval -- something not as likely as I at first
thought, as at least nine other DRM-encumbered sharing schemes were
approved in addition to TiVos, creating sort of an insta-lobby -- we
probably won't pay this too much mind until products using the
TiVoToGo service are implemented. But we thought you might at least
like to know it's coming.

Senate approves PIRATE act
Senate approves PIRATE act
06/26/2004 02:42 AMToday, the U.S. Senate approved a proposal that will give federal
prosecutors the power to file civil lawsuits against suspected
copyright infringers -- penalties include fines up to hundreds of
thousands of dollars.
The so-called Pirate Act has raised alarms among copyright lawyers and
lobbyists for peer-to-peer companies, who have been eyeing the
recording industry's lawsuits against thousands of peer-to-peer users
with trepidation. They worry that the Department of Justice could be
even more ambitious.
Senate leaders scheduled Friday's vote under a procedure that required
the unanimous consent of all members present. Now the Pirate Act,
along with a related bill that criminalizes using camcorders in movie
theaters, will be forwarded to the House of Representatives for
approval.

DVD Forum Approves DualDisc
DVD Forum Approves DualDisc
06/14/2004 01:13 PM
The approval of the DualDisc
audio standard by the DVD Forum could open up some potentially
interesting options for not only DVD-Audio but plain ol' DVD-Video, as
well. The DualDisc format basically glues a standard audio CD onto the
back of a DVD, allowing the DVD to be played in both DVD-Audio and
regular CD players. But there's nothing that says the DVD side has to
be audio -- the single-layer DVD could instead have a video, like say
live concert footage, while the CD side has the live album. The
options abound, I say.

FCC Approves Broadcast Flag
FCC Approves Broadcast Flag
11/04/2003 07:06 PMAs was very much expected, the FCC ignored plenty of reasons why this
is a terrible idea and has
approved the "broadcast flag" for digital TV
programs. All digital TV receivers will need to recognize this flag,
meaning that people will (a) need to buy new equipment and (b) lose
plenty of fair use rights. Note that it will do nothing to stop
"piracy" as the industry claims. It's unclear from the quick
Associated Press version of the article how the broadcast flag is
going to be implemented (that is, who is going to set it up and
approve it), but I'm sure that information will come out shortly.
Anyway, here we have another political decision that will do nothing
to solve an actual problem, but will make most people worse off.
